Thoughts please.

A bit much, I'd have thought.

moondog · 12/11/2007 19:25

Too much
Sorry
Creeps up real easy doesn't it??

HuwEdwards · 12/11/2007 19:25

I think a hell of a lot of people do that - it's still over the recommended units per week and at the very least a Bad Habit.

Wotz · 12/11/2007 19:25

That is above the recommended amount for a woman each week. Someone is bound to post the guidelines soon.

MaryAnnSingleton · 12/11/2007 19:26

it's a lot to me - we share 1 bottle over a weekend and that;s it ! (unless out to dinner or at a party tyhen it's more)

ProfessorGrammaticus · 12/11/2007 19:26

a drink problem, definitely. but can't tell how serious without more info

Sheherazadethegoat · 12/11/2007 19:27

too much and agree with moondog. i have cut out 'pointless drinking' over teh past 6 months and feel alot better and richer for it. also i am no longer embarrassed on bottle recycling day.

nimnom · 12/11/2007 19:27

Sounds a lot to me - but when we're on holiday we drink that without thinking about it so I could see how it could become a habit at home too.

fawkeoff · 12/11/2007 19:28

sounds a bit much to me, but i dont really drink in the house

HairyIrene · 12/11/2007 19:29

too much if for one person..

tunise · 12/11/2007 19:30

I thinks it's too much, DP says it's what normal people do. IT's causing arguements and it's a lot of money.
I actually drink very little and come from a family of very light drinkers. He comes from a family of heavy drinkers....

moondog · 12/11/2007 19:30

I would drink that much on high days and holidays but as a regular thing it aint good.
It also makes you fat and makes you feel shite.
You have probably forgotten what it is like to wake up with a clear head.

WendyWeber · 12/11/2007 19:30

It's not a drink problem necessarily - after all those weekly units-of-alcohol figures were plucked out of the air by some bureaucrat - but it is a potential health problem.

Someone in one of the papers had an expensive liver function test recently and was shocked at the results, I'll try to find it (it's a private test that costs £250 but shows up problems early)

DaphneHarvey · 12/11/2007 19:30

One bottle per person, or per couple? (ie. half a bottle each 5 nights a week).

In my circle half to one bottle per person most nights of the week is the norm.

Far too much, I know.

Think we now have a ticking time-bomb of alcoholism amongst the middle classes (probably amongst all classes afaik, its just the middle lot I am most familiar with).

ScoobyDoo · 12/11/2007 19:31

Sounds way to much to me, i know someone who used to do it though, then she started getting drunk in the mornings, thank god she came out of denial & has got back on top of it.

tunise · 12/11/2007 19:32

Thanks for replys, to clairfy it's DP who's drinking a bottle Most nights, alone.

WendyWeber · 12/11/2007 19:33

Here you go - it was Lauren Booth, in the Mail I'm afraid but I don't think that devalues her report.

I need to cut back but have no willpower . I'm seriously considering hypnotherapy.

Whizzz · 12/11/2007 19:33

limits here

Wotz · 13/11/2007 08:23

It is also a good point that is someone is drinking that much than they should expect to be over the legal limit to drive the next morning.

BecauseImWorthIt · 13/11/2007 08:35

If you share a bottle of wine each night, with a meal, it is undoubtedly over the weekly limit in terms of units.

But is it really that bad?

It seems such a civilised thing to do - as well as being enjoyable!

This really worries me, as wine with our meal is just part of our lifestyle, but if you believe everything in the media dh and I are doomed.

But I agree with moondog, it does creep up on you, and moving from just one to two bottles is something that easily happens, especially at the weekend. And sitting drinking a whole bottle on your own is definitely worrying.

fishie · 13/11/2007 08:43

there's a fair difference between an 11% italian white and a 14.5% chilean red too. not to mention these enormous buckets posing as glasses.

i spend a lot of time scouring the supermarket shelves for weaker wine and i use a very small glass so my two glasses are probably very different to somebody else's.

noddyholder · 13/11/2007 08:46

It is too much for 1 person and drinking 5 nights a week is a habit which although it may seem civilised and enjoyable does have health and emotional implications.A bottle of wine to one person=drunk and that must be a worry.

BecauseImWorthIt · 13/11/2007 08:55

fishie - Sainsbury have just launched their own range of lower alcohol wine, called 10% (very nice graphics/label).

So far we have tried their Chardonnay and a Rose, which is a Shiraz, I think and they also do a Pinot Grigio, which I haven't tried.

The 'full' alcohol alternative is 12-13%, whereas these are 10% (obviously, as the name implies!) and they are very nice - I doubt anyone would taste them and realise they are any different.

I assume that this amount is a significant decrease, but don't know really! I just bought them thinking that anything that reduces the amount of alcohol (without compromising on taste) must be a good thing.

Buda · 13/11/2007 08:58

Def to much and I am a big wine drinker. Also big cos I drink too much wine!

We have wine most nights - DH will have a beer and I will have a white wine and then we open a bottle of red with dinner. Have been cutting down though and I have been sticking to white wine and soda and DH has 2 beers instead and maybe a whiskey before bed.

It is hard to give up though as it is such a pleasurable thing to do.

LazyLinePainterJane · 13/11/2007 09:03

Wotz makes a very good point. Is your DH driving the next morning? He may not feel drunk as his tolerance will have increased with the prolonged increase in consumption, but the alcohol will be there in his system still.
