Adult scooters (not electric ones)

I've always judged adults who use big scooters but now DD is able to ride a bike, I want to be able to keep up with her without taking my own bike everywhere too. Is it ridiculous for a Middle Aged woman to have a scooter? If not, what do you look for in one?

I've got one, well it was passed on to me. I was secretly pleased because I've always been too heavy to ride on the kids' ones and they look like fun.

Anyway, I do feel like a bit of a tit using it, but it is fun and I enjoy being able to keep up with the kids instead of as you say, taking the bike along or just walking miles behind. Strangely enough when I see other adults using scooters it's always made me smile in a 'good on you' sort of a way.

Thanks. I'm ok with feeling like a bit of a tit. Key criteria for DD was flashing lights but I think I don't need that. Does yours have a handbrake?

No handbrake, just the foot break where you rest your weight on the back wheel. But to be honest we only really go on fairly flat areas or away from cars so I don't really need it, imagine you might need one if you're going places that are quite hilly or near roads.
I've embraced feeling like a tit a bit more now. It's lots of fun but more exercise than I thought!

I've got a big purple adult Micro scooter. I thought as I was going to look silly on one anyway, it might as well be in a fun colour! I do feel daft riding it but who cares?

BlowDryRat · 03/04/2021 17:52

@StilettosAndBrokenBottles it's like doing lunges repeatedly, isn't it? I was staggering around after a scoot with DD and Body Pump. I can keep up with the DC though!

StilettosAndBrokenBottles · 03/04/2021 17:53

Yes!! I was exhausted the day after I first did it. Grin

I've got one any it's great but it does hurt your calf muscles! Mine is from decathlon and I don't feel like a tit now because so many people have them round here (S London)

I recommend the Facebook group 'Kick Scooters in Uk' - you'll get good advice and lots of inspiration. I have a Xooter and a Yedoo. Xooter is great for pavements. Yedoo great for more rural scooting.

I saw loads of well dressed middle aged women using scooters when my DD lived in Lyon. It was a very efficient way of getting round the city. Just pretend to be French!

5-7 years ago (when I was mid to late 30s), I looked into getting a scooter. I went up to other adults who had them and asked them questions about their scooters. They mentioned size of wheels as being important. i did a bit of research and liked the sound of Hudora RX 205. I found out these were german and therefore decided to purchase from amazon.de. I still have it and plan to start using it soon for the same reasons as you. I am now late 30s / early 40s.

Just to add, I purchased a shoulder strap separately. I accidentally left the scooter on a train once (I had my contact details on the bottom and contacted the different trains lost and found - no return) So I had to purchase a second one. That second one is still going 5 years later.

I go scooting with my 10 year old. I might look a bit silly but I don't really care and people generally don't give a second glance.

Scooting is hard work though I tell you. I can ride my bike quite a distance but 19 minutes of scooting and I'm huffing and puffing.
