ds just asked me a flooding question - what about the Great Yarmouth aquarium?

Didn't want to put this on the 'In the news' thread as it may be a bit insensitive but ds saw Great Yarmouth on the news. We visited the aquarium there at Easter and he's worried what will happen to the fish if it floods. I suggested they'd be OK because they can swim but he's not happy with that response. He's 4 so at that argumentative age and I suspect he's right, tbh, flooding can't be a good thing for them can it?

I know this probably sounds a bit insensitive as well, but could you not just say that they had been moved to another aquarium in the meantime

edam · 09/11/2007 08:27

Think I'll use that, Saltire, thanks.

But he's got me curious now; what do aquariums do when it floods?

Got me wondering as well!

From what I remember the sea life centre is quite high up? It seems not to have been as bad as first thought though. Think Yarmouth os going to be alright. I'm in Norfolk and don't think it has ever had so much media coverage before!

tanks may be closed but I dunno, pressure of water agains the glass?

If I remember my biology, freshwater fish cannot live in salt water and vice versa - there's some kind of implosion/explosion problem. So, edam, guess it would depend if the aquarium floods with river water or sea water, which fish would implode, which would explode, and which would be as happy as pigs in...waitagoshdarnminute, is sewage a factor?!

LostPuppy · 14/11/2007 09:35

Be logical, the glass tanks are built to keep the fish's water in, so they'd also keep flood water out.

But they have, like, Rays and stuff in open pools, so that toddlers can be fed to them ...
