Hi, Friends of mine are coming over from NZ and want to move to Hove (to be near london and beaches...). Can anyone advise on a good place to live in Hove near good State schools (they have 3 primary school children and one in nursery. Any guidance on good areas would be helpful!

I live in Brighton at Fiveways really excellent schools and community/villagey feel.Hove is 2 minutes up the road but unless you can afford a house in a really expensive road the cheaper areas are not so nice and the schools not so good.Preston Park,Fiveways and westdene are good areas for homes and schools.HTH

thanks Noddy5 - that is certainly a good starting point!

Most of Hove is lovely. The majority of Hove is fine - perhaps avoid Hangleton. How much do they have to spend? West Hove is more affordable than central Hove if money is an issue. Schools are generally good too. I think they will be very happy there

I used to live in portslade. Thats a nice area. There's a good school on portland road called west hove and next to that is a private nursery called hopscotch. I know this is a good nursery as ds went there and i worked there. You do need to book early for it though as places go quite quickly. Hth

I was brought up in Hove. Lived between Wish Park and Portslade, near Hove Lagoon, but ironically went to Hangleton Junior School because more local schools were not so good - even 30 years ago !! Area between Hove Park and Dyke Road is nice house wise (nice prices too!)and the roads near seafront, west of Sackville Road, but can't offer any recommendations for schools as noone I still know down there has school age kids.

Im a Hove girl - I think its great, only 10mins from the centre of Brighton and everything I really need is within easy (flat!) walking distance - and the beach too of course. Poets Corner and the area near Hove station seem to represent the best VFM property wise at the moment but not many big houses - for space they may like to consider moving out to Shoreham or Portslade. DS isn't school age yet so I can't offer any real advice on primary schools - I don't think any have particularly bad reputations but I gather St Andrews and Cottesmore get the best league table results. From my own nursery research Blueberry nursery stood out from the rest - long waiting list but DS hopefully starts in Jan. My friends DD was at Young Sussex but she didn't rate it particularly well. Another's DS is at Playcare on Windelsham Rd and likes it . HTH

I went to Hove County Grammar school, anyone else?

LIZS · 29/10/2004 18:43

My db went to the Grammar for Boys but I went to the High School because it was at the time of the secondary schools going comprehensive and the system was somewhat chaotic.

(I think?).

LIZS · 29/10/2004 19:18

Year below mine I think - scary.....

treacletart · 29/10/2004 19:24

They all wear make up, short skirts, black tights and trainers now - we'd never have got away with that! Do you remember a weird practice of finding the page in the hymnal for a teacher if you sat on the end of a line in asembly next them - seems so weird now I may have dreamt it. When was the last time you said the word druggett?

LIZS · 29/10/2004 19:30

No sadly you didn't dream it - that, green knickers, a-line skirts to reach the floor when you knelt, sensible brown (not brownish polish over burgundy!) shoes, science overall and gym kit with name embroidered on the front... the list goes on and on

bozzy · 29/10/2004 22:39

Hey, thanks everyone for your input - Not quite sure of their budget but they could probably afford a relatively nice area - they are looking for a large house and garden - any other ideas, keep them coming!

I live in Hove. IMO the nicest part is central Hove near the sea, shops and station, between Sackville Road and Wish Park. Big Victorian houses, some with reasonable gardens. Best primary school (league table/popularity-wise) is St Andrews but it's a church school so they would probably need to be church-goers to get in. Ditto Cottesmore (catholic). Otherwise it would be West Hove, which is good for infants but not so nice for juniors. Further out west say Wish Park to Boundary Road you get more house for your money, catchment still largely West Hove, but further from shops, bars, library etc. If they look further East say Seven Dials round Montefiore/Lyndhurst/Highdown area you get an arty, 'Londonish' community with good infant school - Davigdor and Somerhill Junior school.Again nice Victorian houses but tiny gardens and tight parking. Nice park there too - St Anne's Well, opposite schools. I don't know much about anything North of the railway line as too far from the sea for me! HTH

redshoes · 30/10/2004 08:49

Nursery schools - nicest imo is Home from Home on New Church Road (near Sackville Road end), in family house, big garden only 20 kids, but it is very popular thay would need to get on list now. Blueberry also popular - that one is near the Seven Dials area.hth
