House Name Issue

Hi All,

Not sure if this is the right topic thread but don't think this is a legal issue?

I live in a small village and have done so for 20 years. The house I live in is called Cherrytree Cottage and always has been. We have no number, simply the name.

In the last year, a house in the next street has decided to informally name their house the same. By informally, it is actually a number (e.g 1 Smith Street) but they have put a small sign up saying Cherrytree Cottage and we have since been inundated with post/deliveries where the address is listed as:
Cherrytree Cottage
1 Smith Street

Despite finding it annoying, I've always walked the post and parcels round - although they never answer the door! The last package, I left a note explaining that it's really confusing and could they ensure all mail is addressed using their actual address: 1 Smith Street. (I've checked on land registry, Royal Mail etc and it's definitely not formally called Cherrytree cottage)

I've just had a grocery order left on my doorstep for their house - which has led me to thinking this is enough! Does anyone have any advice on where I stand? Should i formally write to them asking them to use their actual address and see if that works? Or is there some other way of tackling this?

Thanks in advance

I’d keep it and not say anything. I’d they come round I’d lose my shit.

You can't stop them using any name or insist they address their deliveries in any particular way but you can stop delivering their items to them. I'd be binning it all straight away.

Are they using the correct postcode because that it the thing that directs most post/deliveries. By the time it gets to the correct post code area, they wouldn't/shouldn't be close enough to your property to cause confusion.

trevthecat · 26/02/2021 12:36

I would keep it. Don't keep delivering for them. If they have to pick everything up they will probably change the way they put in the address on orders

It's literally the next "street" and its quite a confusing village layout. The postcode differs by one letter at the end and most delivery drivers who I assume use postcodes, seem to end up in the area, and then drive around looking for the house. As ours is in the centre of the village - I assume they're seeing ours first!

Nothing to add, but they are CFs!!

Return to sender. For every single thing until they get the message.

Thanks, I'll try this approach! I'm sure they'll get fed up of querying missing deliveries which should hopefully prompt them to use the proper address.

Noted 4 bottles of Gin in this grocery order - every cloud!! Grin

Contact the council for advice. They usually have a street name and numbering department but to be honest, I'd keep everything that comes through the door and completely ignore doorstep deliveries and pretend you haven't seen them.
Let them feel the pain of their decision!
