Caps or foils?

I'd like to have me hair done! I'm hoping in this new age of enlightenment the haridresser will be happy to put colour on my hair, I'd like to have some high/low lights type thing, just something to look NICE! It is my treat for pre-labour to try and ensure that at least one part of me looks decent with my post baby body! But, I've never had it done before, found a not to frightening looking hairdressers today, but don't know what I want! The foils are more expensive, and so I'm guessing better, but I'd love some opinions to help me make the right choice and not end up looking a scarecrow! TIA!

Foils are generally viewed as the thing to have, all the most expensive hairdressers dont seem to even offer the cap. I'm not a hairdresser, but I've had highlights for years and apparently foils offer much less regrowth (ie. the colour is applied closer to the root).

jodee · 27/10/2004 20:48

Umm, foils are better, but then it depends on the hairdresser, I tried out a new place recently, thought she had done a good job and it was only when I got home and had a proper look that I realised she hadn't got near to the scalp AT ALL and I will have to have them done again much sooner than I would lke (or can afford).
Lesson: TELL the hairdresser to get as near as dammit to the roots!

Flossam · 27/10/2004 20:52

But is the hairdresser likely to be more keen then to go for a cap if it keeps it further away from the root? I've heard someone tell me that this is what they try to do when a woman is pregnant! I'd really like to foils if they are better though. Does it give bigger chunks of colour? Sorry, I've always done things like this at home myself can't normally afford trips like this! So that's why I'm so clueless!

Flossam, the best thing to do is go in to make an appointment, but say you would like to have a discussion with a "technician" (never understand why they call themselves that - the ones that do the colour) about what you would like. As merlot said, upmarket salons will probably not use a cap anyway. You can have hi-lights/low-lights as fine as you want, or go the other way for more of a "slice" of colour. I'm not a hairdresser either, but best to have a thorough discussion with them first if you are not sure.Good luck!

Bear in mind too that if you have any shades of red put in it will fade really quickly.

I had mine done, cost me 70 quid and within about 2 weeks the red was hardly noticable.

Jennisaurus · 27/10/2004 21:22

Foils all the way. I think my hair dressers (Toni and Guy, v.expensive but do amazing colours) call them weaves or something?

Foils give a much nicer tone because they can use more than one colour on them.

Caligula · 27/10/2004 21:30

Can I hijack this thread and ask anyone in the know what the effect will be if I colour over the foils I've just had done?

Got them done about a month ago. Natural colour is very very dark with about 50% grey, and so now the effect is streaked with blondish. Liked the idea, but in practice I look ancient like I've given up on life. I was thinking of getting red bits put in but Nutcracker's put me off. What if I colour over? Will it be disastrous?

How much do Toni and Guy charge for foils, Jennisaurus?

(Flossam, I'm justifying this on the basis that if you don't like it when you've got it done, you might want to know the answers to these questions too!)

Jennisaurus · 27/10/2004 21:43

Toni and Guy where I live (v.cheap) cost £40 for half a head of foils.

In most places it will be a bit more expensive...like I say they are not cheap but I have always been very happy with their service.

Caligula · 27/10/2004 21:45

Hmm, what's half a head? I don't know what I had done. I paid £50 for mine, and it might only have been half a head, and it certainly wasn't as posh as Toni and Guy... how would you know how much head it was (as it were?!)

Jennisaurus · 27/10/2004 21:50

Look under the top layer of hair. Mine are blonde (and very old!) but you can definately see that underneath my hair there is no blonde just my natural dark brown. I think half a head is just the top layer.

They do do these fab ones now where they weave the colour under the top layer of hair which stops roots being such a problem. When I was in last and asking about them I was quoted £60 (?) for my long hair.

I am such a fan of Toni and Guy, only started going there when I moved away from home and wanted somewhere I knew would give me a decent cut but have been more than impressed. Their colourists are fantastic and they have only ever given me amazing cuts that grow out very nicely.

Flossam · 27/10/2004 22:59

Think Tony and Guy might be out of the price range cause I want a cut too... Living in London is also going to mean the prices are more. Have just moved to a new area, there seems to be a lack of 'posh' hairdressers IYSWIM, but one dosen't look too bad. The prices are reasonable at least! Think a cut and colour at my old place would scare DP! A cut alone was about £45, so colour and cut I dread to think!

Flossam, I get sooo annoyed with DH every time I go to the hairdressers (which isn't very often, I draaag it out for as long as possible).

I get the "HOW much ????" comments... "Well MINE only cost £8, blah blah".

artyjoe · 27/10/2004 23:44

Hi Flossam

I've got 10 weeks left and have treated myself today by getting some fab colours put in my hair. I had foils and very thick streaks, not right on the root due to my being pregnant and paranoid, but I had three colours, dark violet, purple and brillant red (not dissimilar to Sharon Osbornes but with much longer hair). If I had 2inch hair then I'd probably go for a cap, but anything longer and the pain and breakage isn't worth it.

I'd be spending the money now before you give birth as then you will automatically put your luxuries second best!

lilsmum · 28/10/2004 00:42

flossam, i am a qualified hairdresser.

cap is very hard on the hair and not very comfortable having it done, also is true that doesnt get very close to the roots.

foils are nice and can offer more of a variation i.e chunkier ones on top etc but are expensive also note that if not a very good hairdresser you can get "bleeds" on the foils and end up with nasty tiger stripes near the roots.

i would personally go with spatula highlights... they are good for variation, get close to the roots, cant really get a bleed with them and much nicer on the hair and much cheaper than foils!!

red will fade quite quickly though that is true. you have to think of how often you can tend to the up keep in time and money.

Agree about foils, cap just breaks my hair.
If you want to put colour on grey or blonde you need to get the colour 'filled' first. It will still fade but should make the hair look quite different from what it does now.
Good luck I had mine highlighted 4 weeks before labour and 7months later am still trying to find the time to get back to have it done again.
At my hair dressers a half head is all the crown, sides and a few underneath so you can put your hair in a ponytail.
