Would you cancel holiday?

I’m in a quandary. We have a uk holiday booked for the Easter holidays. We’ve paid our deposit but the balance is due to go out at end of the month. Would you cancel now and just lose deposit or would you wait for the company to possibly cancel it? If we or our destination are in tier 86 or whatever by then, a holiday would be rubbish if all cafes and restaurants are closed but we were legally allowed to go on holiday. Does that make sense? So, to sum up, we cancel or wait for them to?...

Don’t cancel. You might as well wait.

TreacleHart · 20/01/2021 12:07

I'd cancel , but then I wouldn't have booked in the first place.
People that justify that they haven't been able to afford a holiday in years , or they need one because x,y,z . Bollocks. We are in a pandemic.

TreacleHart · 20/01/2021 12:12

My above comment might have sounded harsh but at the very least you will be food shopping etc. The place you are due to go to might have much less medical facilities than where you live so if you bring the virus with you , people may need a hospital bed .

2typesofjungle · 20/01/2021 12:13

Where is the holiday and where are you? I think Scotland, England and Wales will be in different situations by then.

lovelemoncurd · 20/01/2021 12:14

Ignore the harsh replies. You are asking if you should cancel or wait to hear I presume.

I would wait. We are doing the same. We had holiday booked for Easter. We've had an email through to say we will contact you nearer the time. I presume it will get cancelled or you will have the option to change dates.

IndieRo · 20/01/2021 12:29

You have done nothing wrong by booking a holiday for Easter so don't listen to the nasty comments. I would wait and see what type of tiers will be in place closer to the time.

kennycat · 20/01/2021 13:10

Thanks for those who’ve been helpful.
To the smart Alec who said they wouldn’t have booked in the first place, this holiday was booked in September 2019. Before any of this had started. So there.

We are in Midlands.

Holiday is north east.

The balance comes out at the end of jan which is before any more COVID announcements will be made. So I’m gambling basically!! If I cancel I’ll lose deposit, if they cancel we get it back. We’ve had email to say they will be in touch after feb 21st. Which is after the money goes out Confused

I’d wait-especially as it’s within the Uk. I’m hoping to visit my parents city in the ne at Easter. I wouldn’t cancel.

loopyapp · 20/01/2021 14:55

We've just cancelled our two weeks over easter at a Welsh Haven site as we live in an area that has consistently been in a tier 3 or 4 and wales were very clear about admission from higher tiered areas.

We're going to hold out until the summer hols and book last minute. We did it last year and got a blinding deal :)

Mirrorxx · 20/01/2021 15:04

We also have an Easter break booked in the uk and have decided to ask to move the dates instead

Floralnomad · 20/01/2021 15:11

How much is the deposit and is that a significant amount for you ? . I’ve just cancelled a trip to Disney Paris which was booked for June ( carried over from last June ) , fortunately I’m getting all my money back . We potentially could still have gone but it would have meant a downgrade on the hotel so we’d rather wait until the Disneyland Hotel reopens . I’m not booking anything else until things are clearer , not worth the aggravation IMO

kennycat · 20/01/2021 15:47

I think the deposit was more than I’d like to kiss goodbye to but may need to!! Who thinks things will be open by Easter? We got lucky at October half term as east anglia was only in tier 2 so things were open. Just! Not sure how lucky we’d get again. A holiday with no restaurants and cafes would not be a holiday for us tbh.

You booked a U.K. holiday 15 months ago? Are you this organised in all areas of your life?

You should be able to call them and ask for more time? I know centre parcs have changed their policy and the balance can be paid 28 days before your existing booking rather than 12 weeks.

What are the T&C and pandemic cover? I would probably wait and see but be prepared for a potential battle over getting dates that allow you a proper holiday.
RandomMess · 20/01/2021 18:06

At least it would be a different area to walk around and a different 4 walls to look at, also a break/change of scenery it may still be nice to go?

Often I am, but we had such a brilliant holiday we wanted to get it in the diary. Little did we know...

Can you contact the company to find out what their policy is? A lot of companies are taking covid restrictions into consideration and are being flexible with bookings - I would ask them what your options are, or could you transfer the booking to later on in the year / next year instead?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 20/01/2021 22:10

but at the very least you will be food shopping etc.

They'd be food shopping at home.

I'd wait OP. Yes, we are in a pandemic now, but it's not April yet.
