Postman opening my front door - who do I complain to?

FlameInHell · 27/10/2007 12:16

It has happened a couple of times before - parcels appearing on my mat that can't fit through the letterbox. Today I was sat on the stairs as he opened my front door and threw a parcel in

I'm fuming - had a go at him, asked him not to do it, and he rambled about us not being in a lot and it saving taking it back to the sorting office - even with me explaining that if we are not in the THE DOOR IS LOCKED. He didn't even try knocking

I could have been naked, I could have a small animal that shoots out of any open door, I could accuse him of rape for all he knows.

Who do I complain to? The local sorting office? A helpline of some sort?

I miss my old postman

I love the wildly differing opinions on this thread now

(Yes it is me FFF)

I think it is the intrusion aspect of it that upsets me most, and the worry of what could happen to him at another house (my friend's house, the dog would go for him very fast and very vicious).

I will leave the full complaint for the time. He didn't seem to understand why it might not be a good idea.

Had he knocked and put it in I would be less bothered.

Had he knocked, and asked me if in future he should just try the door and put it in, I would be even less bothered.

My children don't go out of the door, my friends and family don't walk in without knocking first and they know to open it gently incase of DS being sat there (god only knows why he likes sitting on a scratchy mat to play ).

I will not start locking my door in the daytime. I do not feel the need here, maybe things will change, but right now I like knowing that I feel safe enough not to.

Thank you for all the replies - it is good to see all the different perspectives

Surely though the postman is only opening the front door wide enough to get the parcel in, hurling in said parcel and going on about their business its not like they are actually coming in and having a nose around. I really can't see the problem with that. Tons of people don't hear their own front door bell or don't hear a knock, I know my mum doesn't so would never answer when in, she'd be forever out picking stuff up.

lailasmum · 27/10/2007 19:29

sounds like a chilled out approach is a good one, maybe just ask him to knock before he does it so your little isn't sitting behind the door, thats very reasonable.

FlameInHell · 29/10/2007 10:33

He's just knocked VERY loudly at my door, glared at me, and fired my parcel at me

electrocute the knocker

I can't understand the reactions on this thread tbh.

FWIW, our door is unlocked during the day Flame. Not because of lack of crime (a near by shop was held up at gun point once!) but because we live above the ground floor and even friends who KNOW where i live find it hard to find the door!

I would be furious if my postie did that at my house, for the same reasons as you Flame - the intrusion side.

Hold off on your full complaint for now though, they are probably still in a muddle after the strikes. I haven't seen my regualr postie for a while and he may be covering holidays. he knows now but if he does it again you could always answer the door nude!!

frumpygrumpy · 29/10/2007 10:48

I'd be saying thanks! I wouldn't be bothered my shirt if the postie popped in with my mail. In fact, I'd love it In part of Scotland/Ireland this is perfectly normal and acceptable and they have been known to have a cuppa

I'm most happy to have my parcels left instead of having to make a trip to the depot where I can never get parked.

If the door is open its an unwritten rule for "come on in" isn't it?

frumpygrumpy · 29/10/2007 10:51

Make a friend of him, it will pay off. I have regular chats with mine, he waves when I'm out in the car too. Lets love our Posties (its not an easy job)

MerlinsBeard · 29/10/2007 10:53

our normal postie is lovely actually. We know whenhe is off as he usually warns us because the idiot who covers for him leaves our post in the doorstep(we haven;t aletter box)

FlameInHell · 29/10/2007 10:57

I think now I've had a go at him (hormones in full drive on Saturday) the friend thing is out... I can see me with broken fragile things soon

They are all over the place at the moment, different staff at the sorting office too, shutting at random times due to staff shortages. I'm hoping it is all just a hiccup and I will get my old postman back, or one I get on with

The last 2 years I have had 4 post people, the first saw me through my pregnancy, was lovely and gave me long enough to waddle to the door/detach a newborn etc, the second and third seemed to alternate every few months - one had a chat with me discussing the amount of parcels I get, sorted a safe place to put them when I was out etc, the other played with DS if we met on the way out, waves in town etc... and now this one that I have had a clash with.

I think personalities could be a big issue here

do you get a lot of parcels?

wonder if there is someway of holding ALL your parcels at the sorting office and ou collected once/twice/however many times a week? rather than having them chucked thru your door without a thought

Or if they are all from teh same place, getting them to use couriers instead

FlameInHell · 29/10/2007 11:13

It varies, sometimes I get lots, sometimes less - if I get them in the morning though it normally means I can get the order sent out that afternoon, whereas I would need to do 2 trips to the sorting office to get there each day.

Have been pondering some sort of lockable box in the garden, leave the key inside, they put parcel in then post key through door... but some git'd probably swipe the box

OP posts:
MerlinsBeard · 29/10/2007 11:14

or a note on teh door that says please knock

FlameInHell · 29/10/2007 11:17

you're just gettin cocky now

MerlinsBeard · 29/10/2007 11:18

me? nah

Jess45 · 21/10/2016 23:51

That's what my postman done earlier today. My brother heard them knocking and was on his way downstairs when the postman opened the door and threw (not sit) the parcel down. I would sack them for this 😡😡😡😡

Floggingmolly · 21/10/2016 23:54

Why on earth don't you lock your door?? You won't be "locked in", everybody else will be locked out... Confused

HillaryFTW · 21/10/2016 23:56

Thread is nine years old

Floggingmolly · 21/10/2016 23:57

It was in Active Blush

Floggingmolly · 21/10/2016 23:59

Wtf, Jess?? It wasn't in Active convos when you posted Confused

QuimReaper · 22/10/2016 00:05

Everything about this is weird, from the inexplicably-unlocked door and the inexplicable nine-year bump!
