cos I don't

article in sunday times was about how we'd save energy by not changing the clocks

what do you think?

Particularly interested in Scottish opinions.

If you live in scotland it does make a real difference. (say she , having lived in scotland)

Blandmum · 26/10/2007 18:26

Otherwise you seem to live in the dark.....

brimfull · 26/10/2007 18:28

Yes agree apparently it would still be dark up there at 9am if we didn't change.

Does one hr make that much difference though?

Makes a difference to light mornings/evening etc. I like it.

Blandmum · 26/10/2007 18:29

yes it does. particularly for kids going to school etc

brimfull · 26/10/2007 18:30

yes but
lighter earlier but darker also earlier

it would be better for fuel efficeiency because we would all be coming home from work/school in the light

At the moment it isn't light until nearly 8am in the morning. In december it stays dark until 9am GMT - that would be 10 o'clock if we stayed on BST.
We live in Perthshire, it would be worse if we were further north.
I actually like the short days in winter - and I love the long summer days. I felt cheated living in England when it got dark in June at 9pm!

yes it is, I think they tried not doing it once and it was awful. [i may be wrong though]

BigGitDad · 26/10/2007 18:44

Wht don't they just change the clocks in scotland.
When I lived in Newcastle it always suprised me how long the evenings were as opposed to being in London. Didn't seem that much different in winter though.

SoMuchToBats · 26/10/2007 18:45

They did try it once, in about 1968 (Iam old enough to remember it ). I assume it wasn't a success, as it was never repeated.

Blandmum · 26/10/2007 18:55

It is horrible getting up and going to work in the dark.

I don't mind going home in the dark anything like as much.

Live in england atm, so it isn't an issue for me. But TBH if you live in scotland it doesn make a big difference.

Not sure that having different times zones in a country as small as the UK would really work.

MrsBadger · 26/10/2007 19:10

"do you think the clocks changing twice a yr is really necessary?"

well, if we only did it once a year we'd be in trouble pretty fast...

Tinker · 26/10/2007 19:12

I love dark evenings. Would hate to be cheated out of them but the lightophiles

prettybird · 26/10/2007 20:41

I live in Scotland and although it does make a difference, I owuld prefer if we did stay on summer time. It would then give the kids a chance to have a bit of daylight to play in after school and would save lives.

I can remember the trial back in the 60s. It wasn't that it wasn't a success: the MPs voted against retaining it 'cos they were told about the increase in deaths that had occurred in the morning. What they weren't told was that an even greater number of lives were saved at the end of the day.

screamsprout · 26/10/2007 20:44

The evening rush hour is busier than the morning one, and children are more likely to be involved in accidents after school than before so some light at the end of the day would surely be a good thing?

wheresthehamster · 26/10/2007 20:50

I remember 1968 and didn't like going to school in the dark. I remember the adverts on TV - wear a white scarf, walk on the right (or left?) side of the road. I found it all a bit spooky. Plus you couldn't see the number of the bus until it was too late

I wouldn't be too happy with dd1 going to school by train in the dark either

choufleur · 27/10/2007 15:48

just know i'm not looking forward to ds waking at 5.30am tomorrow morning rather than usual 6.30am. don't see why we need to do it really, you either have to leave in the dark or come home in the dark doesn't make that mush difference does it?
