OK I know I should know these things but I've forgotten, so

Do you need to boil water for a 6 month old

When weaning a 6 month old how quickly do you introduce new food .. is it once a day

And also how quickly do you build up number of meals

I did baby rice and breast milk for breakfast on first day, then on day 2 she had baby rice and breast milk for breakfast and carrot for supper .. now on day 3 she has a slight rash on both arms and a little behind her ears does that mean I should slow down?

What I really need is for someone to write me a chart like you find in Annabel Karmel but for starting at 6 months old

I'm boiling to a year but I know quite a few don't

I started once a day for 2 weeks, then twice for a week then he started waking up at 5 am so he was on 3 huge ones immediately but didn't make any difference

hth

I don't think you need to boil water from 6 months - I certainly didn't.

You can use the Karmel chart - just add 2 months to everything. It's true that when starting weaning at 6 months you may be able to take things a little faster than if starting at 4 months. But there's no actual need to - just do what your dd seems happy with. Easily said, I know!

If you're concerned about a particular food you've introduced the advice is generally to remove it from the diet until symptoms clear, then maybe re-try it. Often you'll find that the reaction will have been coincidence.

We built up the meals really quickly Twiglett and didn't really follow the one food at a time rule to be honest (smacked hand for me). Could you get the Annabel Karmel book out of the library?

Chuffed · 25/10/2004 10:52

oh we're still boiling at almost 7 months although she has been known to have a sip or two of our non boiled bottled water (low sodium) from time to time.

I weaned my DS at 4 months but am allconfused about this weaning at 6 months business. I think I will just take it as slowly as I did with DS. I think I introduced two to three new foods a week for the first month or so and then when he seemd fine after that time I sped things up a bit, although say meat, cheese, eggs and fish etc I did a month at a time.

WestCountryLass · 25/10/2004 23:11

PS. Did you pump off milk to mix with the rice? I am BFing but have not used pump, I can't see the point of using a pump for such a small amount.

I never bothered waiting to introduce new foods. I just did mixtures of veg, sweet pots, fruit etc and gave a bit around each meal time.

SenoraPostrophe · 25/10/2004 23:16

no to boiling

I introduced foods one every 2-3 days for the first couple of weeks. One meal a day only for the first week or so I think (but that was more to do with not having the time at teatime). ds breastfed, but I use formula in his food. Does that help anyone?

zubb · 25/10/2004 23:19

no to the boiling, and as pidge says you can just follow the old 4 month advice when you start at 6 months, but you can speed up a bit when you want - introduce finger foods earlier, more lumpier etc.

I'm still boiling at 6 mo, think I'll stop tho - dh thinks I'm being excessive... I have even been boiling bottled water . Bit of a control freak, I'm afraid.
My doc told me to introduce new foods for 3 consecutive days, by themselves or with other already tested food. Then meat can be introduced at 8 mo. My boy has just today seemed to have got the hang of spoon feeding... Yey!
