Hi, I know this isn’t the place to turn to but just hoping for some advice before I decide what to do 🤷🏻‍♀️
What it is, I live in a small block of flats and the man above me is really getting to me, if I’m doing DIY (no more than 1/4 times a year) he will get a hammer (sounds like one) and smash it at my floor boards. I have recently noticed if I run my taps I hear his footsteps going in to his kitchen and run his taps! I put my washing machine on, he puts his on! If I hoover, he hoovers. If I accidentally bang, he bangs but louder. Is this harassment? Intimidation? I could understand if I was a pain in the backside but I am quiet and keep myself to myself, I am young and live alone with mental health issues and I’m starting to feel really uncomfortable living here. It’s getting to a stage now where I don’t want to wash my clothes, wash up, clean up cause I know it’s going to irritate him. Sorry for posting here but any advice would be great.

Have you had any other dealings with him? is he friendly if you run into him in the hallway?

If it was just the day to day stuff I'd wonder if he thinks he's being considerate. As in doing his hoovering while you're doing yours so the sound won't bother you. But that doesn't make sense for accidental bangs and DIY stuff

That sounds insane: I’d assume he was ill.

When I see him, he’s nice and talkative. But then he’s different upstairs. I have noticed if the private house next door have their music on, he smashes their walls too. There is another older guy in my block of flats and if he’s too loud calling his cat in the man above me goes nuts, back in the summer I overheard him threatening to slap him! All for calling his cats in. Have no proof of this but a couple of months ago my brother was in the communal garden doing something for me and on a nice sunny day a big load of water fell on his back, I know it was the man above me so I confronted him and he tried saying it was the gutter. On a nice sunny day with no wind and how ironic it fell on my brothers back.

Do you rent or own your flat. Is there a management committee

K1192 · 20/12/2020 19:17

@YesMeLady I rent from a housing association. I really don’t want to be one of those people that complain but it’s getting uncomfortable now.

I think speak to your other neighbours, it sounds like they may be thinking much the same as you and going to the housing association as a group may add more weight. Although not sure if some kind of mental health charity may be better?

I agree with previous poster that it's probably a mental health issue, but their poor health is no reason you should have to live in fear. Hopefully going to them will get him help and improve all of your lives
