We currently have a elctric firer and as it needs replacing are considering not having a firer at all which would leave us with move space for furniture etc.

So was wondering how many of you actually have firers / firer places

how often do u use it? had one when we were younger at my parents palce. had one in palce we rented a few years ago but rarely used it. found the central heating worked perfectly.

I've got fireplaces in the lounge and dining room .. they have those gas powered but look like real fires in them .. cost us £50 when we moved in to find out that they're not actually connected to any gas though

We also have 2 original victorian bedroom fireplaces upstairs, which DH wouldn't let me rip out (cos it would make much more sense to have more walls to put beds against) .. he says only gobshites rip out original features .. suppose he's got a bit of a point but they're so impractical in bedrooms

We have a wood burner in our living room which we light most evenings during the winter, wouldn't want to be without some sort of fireplace, makes things more inviting. Although a real fire does create dust. But that and the aga and we can leave the heating off until it gets really cold.

I've got fireplaces in all my rooms, even the bathroom. Love them. Have real fires a lot in the dining room and living room in winter. Think rooms look odd without one but guess it depends on the age of the house. Hate the tv being a focal point in a room

twiglett at wanting to rip them out

house is a new style one - and is such a funny shape and the doors are in the sillies places as well - it;s a dinning room / living room all in one

I think you need a fireplace for a focal point. We've got an Elgin and Hall stone surround with slate hearth and a basket type fire which looks real but is gas. It's beautiful and fantastic in winter - more for effect than heat though I have to say as our house is quite a warm one anyway!

It goes with the older style of our house and looks very 'Val Doonican' with the Xmas decs on!!

I think even in a modern house it would look a bit strange not to have a fire but it's up to you.

Fires are lovely, but if getting rid of yours will give you more room then maybe just get some good lighting, dimmers, lamps and candles, maybe use a nice mirror or picture above the tv as a focal point and mirrors can make the room appear bigger.

I know its shocking Tinker .. its just the bedrooms have large windows down one side and are slightly oddly shaped with alcoves and stuff so it makes it difficult positioning stuff

DH won though .. they're just boarded up for the moment

Fire bowls are lovely and give you option to have one when entertaining etc
