Not a local but DH born there, lived there (and Port Talbot) for years (but the only really good thing about PT is Anthony Hopkins and Richard Burton came from there!).
Blackpill and the Mumbles are lovely, as with all cities there are not-so-lovely areas (Townhill).
Great cycle/pedestrian route all along seafront from town centre to Mumbles Pier (don't look out across the bay to steel works!).
Can I ask why you are thinking of moving there if you've never been (just curious!)

dh comes from Swansea so we visit his folks a few times a year...the town centre itself is a bit on the grotty side IMHO but the coast - mumbles etc - is beautiful with prices to match. We always visit the Black Mountains just to the North of Swansea and they are breathtaking; some sweet villages up there too. Prices have risen a lot in the last couple of years so how much more it can rise remains to be seen...on the plus side, not too far from Cardiff which has fab shops! hth

I've not been to Swansea lately (last time was a drunken student, visiting other students! so vaguely remember the mumbles and curry and a bloomin large hill to climb back up drunk....) but I have been to Bridgend, which seems ok, its near Merthyr Maw, which is very nice and worth a visit if your down that way, although not sure if house prices a lot there? (very big sanddunes near by)

Friends of mine have just relocated from London to Glais on the outskirts of Swansea and love it. We visited a few weekends ago and it seemed really peaceful and very green, loads of woods to walk in etc, but not very good local transport into Swansea. Nice local school though.

Sorry, thats about the extent of my knowledge of the place.

Can you rent a house for a little while first so you can see if you like it?

My sister and her dh live in Swansea, on the Killay/Gower side, but still in the city IYKWIM. They bought their 3 bed victorian terrace about a year ago and paid £105,000 for it, cos it is in a sought-after are. Would have loved Mumbles but couldn't afford there. Prices vary wildly according to area of the city, so be careful with v cheap places!
They love the area- both big surfers/camper vanners and spend most summer weekends out on the Gower beaches. City itself is pretty rundown and there can be some anti-English sentiment esp. as many of the English are students so ususal town/gown problems. That said, I've always found people v friendly and helpful.
Might be worth spending a few days down there in a B&B to scout round and see what you make of area before committing to the move.HTH.

hi, we lived in Swansea for 6 years and have just moved up the M4 cos of DH's work - happy to tell you all - CAT me

bonym · 27/10/2004 16:58

Swansea has really gone up in price in the last year, I think anything for £50K would probably not be in a great area - Bridgend is still quite cheap and is forecast to be the next up and coming area so would be a good time to get in there. Cardiff has gone through the roof and you can't get anything halfway decent for much less than £150K. My company advertises in property posts in both the Swansea and Cardiff areas so I would be happy to send you copies of the papers if you want to CAT me.
