Six year old girl - present ideas?

DD1 has been invited to her friend's sixth birthday party. They are taking them out for a special treat and there are only three guests, so I think this merits a decent birthday present - not just something from my £5-or-under present drawer!

Any brilliant suggestions? Up to £10?

Hama Beads
Bindeez
other craft sets
Disney shop has some nice princess sets in - a bit like Polly Pocket but Cinderella, etc.

Not a specific suggestion, but if you have a Hobbycraft near you, some of their kits are good for birthday presents.

Interesting - Dd1 always loves getting craft stuff, but I heard our next door neighbour complaining bitterly about the number of craft kits her daughter got for her sixth (including from us!) So I was going to try and think of something else - but maybe I will stick with it!

DD has chosen these Disney Princess playsets for her friend's birthdays coming up. They do about 4 different sets at £10 each.

I always buy a book

I go to waterstones and say I want a nice book for a year old

they are always nice

It does depend on the child and also the mother... a lot of craft sets do require adult supervision, and while I quite like getting sticky on a wet weekend, its not to every parent's taste!

I have to admit that the age 8+ potters wheel given to DD when she was 6 is still languishing in the cupboard, that was too much to contemplate! The giver's mother ruefully admitted she'd sent her DH out with instructions to get something 'crafty' but its not what she'd have chosen either! Next summer in the garden, perhaps....

Silver ring?

clothes
hair accessories
book
jigsaw
board game

Thanks for the suggestions. Have never thought of buying clothes/jewellery before but that might just hit the spot. Especially as she has an older sister so probably suffers from hand-me-down syndrome!

I actually spoke to another mum early this week. Her DS recently turned 6. She says pne of the best presents her DS got from a school firend - and same friend has bought similar present last couple of years - is character PJs.

Carbonel · 22/10/2007 20:51

Does your dd have any idea what her friend muight like? My dd (6) has very definite ideas what to buy for her chums now!

Smithagain · 22/10/2007 21:32

The trouble is, DD1 is summer-born and is quite "young" for her age, if you see what I mean. So there is a serious risk that her taste is about a year behind her friend's! That's why I was feeling distinctly clueless, but am feeling more confident now.

Ah, yes I see, my dd is the same but presumably a year older

I have found games very good recently - Junior Scrabble, junior cleudo etc, dd loves them. Jigsaws too can be fun - the whole 'horrible science' range seem to amuse them a lot; even though the jigsaw is tricky and they will ned help, the concepts enthral them.

The book people do some good sets of books which means you can spend the same but get a lot more for your money - dd is really into Jeremy Strong (they are very funny) and there is a good set on there.

Lego is also a big hit with her at the moment, as others have said, but TBH most of her really girly friends are not impressed (but do like Hama beads etc) depends if the birthday friend is a 'girly' girl or more of a 'tomboy' .
