We are renovating a house and want to fit a gas fire in it. There was a gas fire there in the past and it was positioned in front of the chimney but we need to have this chimney capped at the top and bottom so we can't use it as ventilation. Dh has been looking round for information on how to fit one and has been told that if you don't have a chimney you need to buy an electric one. Is this right? Or can we just fit some type of ventilation behind it (it is a very old house with very thick walls though). I@m sure oour old house didn't have a chimney and we had a gas fire...

I'm not convinced we have to have a fire at all (partly because I don't like them but also because we're on a budget to finish it) but dh says that because it is in Scotland people expect to have one- any opinions much appreciated!

TIA

Not sure if this helps but when we moved into our cottage ten years ago there was a gas fire in front of a blocked up inglenook and a vent had been fitted at the side of the inglenook wall right next to a vent in the outside wall.

We got rid of the gas fire straight away and put a wood burner in the inglenook and got rid of the vents.

We had a very nice flueless gas fire in our old house as the chimney couldn't be used - this explains the issues pretty comprehensively.

I've printed that for him Slacker, it seems very helpful so thank you
