I think this is a more than worthy cause!

The petition is here and you'll receive an e-mail from Downing Street to confirm.

I couldn't even watch the show as i knew i'd get upset and think it is actually like viewing child abuse as stated in the petition.
Hope a few of you at least agree.

If I signed I'd be saying my folks abused me, i'm not sure it is child abuse it's absolutely not what I'd do but at the end of the days it was the parents decision to follow the advice and they do TV or no TV have free will. If it is child abuse then should the actions be deemed as illegal?

Angeliz · 19/10/2007 11:24

Putting it on air that it is o.k to put a newborn in a room and leave it to cry 'should' be illegal imo.
It is very damaging advice to some first time unsure Mums who may be swayed and very damaging to the baby.

But they don't believe its damaging. What's the difference if its on air or in the privacy of their own home?

rebelmum1 · 19/10/2007 11:27

You can't ban an alternative point of view because you don't agree. You'd have to have hard evidence.

Angeliz · 19/10/2007 11:32

There is hard evidence that shows that to neglect a baby stunts brain development.
(My wording may be crap but it's my DP's field and he would be able to articulate it better).

OP posts:

Also i think the difference is that if it's on air thousands of vulnerable people may see it and thinks they'll give it a go.

It's dubious to say that leaving a baby to cry is neglect. I think it's dangerous ground. Intelligent people might just as well give it a go too, people are following these methods.

MrsArchieTheInventor · 19/10/2007 11:41

But an 'outdated and discredited parenting theory' to one person might be another person's savior. You only have to read mn to see that we take advice from each other and what works for one won't necessarily work for another.

Granted, I know one of the specific programmes and 'methods' you're on about, and I agree that it did seem rather barbaric, but that's just my opinion. To call for government to 'regulate how babies and children (and their parents) can be portrayed in the media' is tantamount to government telling us how to raise our children, and quite frankly, nanny doesn't always know best.

Angeliz · 19/10/2007 11:42

Leaving a baby for a few minutes to cry is not neglect obviously. I have 3, (youngest 1 + 2) and i can't attend to every one all the time.
But to leave a baby to scream and to have an 'expert' telling crying parents to leave the baby, (as it says in the petition, as i said i didn't watch the show}, is just wrong and in my humble opinion, it is neglect.

I'm pretty sure there was a thread about people talking about that show, i'm suprised people aren't more open to banning such shows. They are a disgrace. Children and babies can't give consent to be on air for the public's amusement.
I think the same of shows like wife swap. Poor kids!
The one talked about where the babies are given to teenagers to put them off sounds horrendous too. I do think we need to start policing what reality T.V shows are actually damaging

You can't tell people what to think and do and police TV. Personally I think adverts and kids TV programmes are more damaging but I don't petition the government to ban it I just turn it off.

MrsArchieTheInventor · 19/10/2007 14:55

Totally agree, rebelmum!

Angeliz · 19/10/2007 15:03

I agree that people will do what they want but i don't agree that age old wrong advice should be spouted and that babies are used for the enjoyment of the public.

I'm with Rebelmum to be honest.
We all have a freedom of choice to watch or turn off, to read childcare books or not or to follow 'advice' or to ignore it. Personally I like having that choice to make my own mind up

Although its great that it's easy now to raise & circulate petitions, I do think far too many of them are ill thought out and devalue the more 'worthy' ones (IMO)
