What does a SALT actually do?

Dd2 (3) suffered from Glue Ear which has now cleared. Has a result her speech has been slightly delayed. The SENCO at her nursery has referred her to a SALT to help her. Her volcabulary is very good but her communication skills need improving - if she needs help at nursery rather than asking for it she gets cross and throws a wobbler!! Just wondering what they will do to help her!

They work wonders - I have a DS3 (5) who has had severe speech problems and we have had a dramatic improvement with SALT intervention - at 3 he was completely unintelligible, and he's now in mainstream school with lots of friends etc. There will be lots of listening activities as well as speaking - mostly as part of a game. I guess there will be an assessment first to identify what specific sounds are a problem (the assessments can be pretty long and dull), and then they'll organise sessions accordingly.

Thanks Hassled. My Dd has a particular problem with any question starting with 'Why..', she just cannot get to grips with what this means. SENCO has said that it is quite an abstract question and is quite a common problem.
