Oh bugger, bugger, bugger, do I take my 2 year old to the NHS walk in centre (again) and prove what a terrible mother I am?!

DD has just turned 2. Today she was walking in the living room and I saw her slip and start crying. She came and sat with me on the sofa, had a good cry and then carried in colouring in.
DH put her shoes on so we could go out, when I took them off earlier, her foot looked dirty, so I cleaned it and found that she has two gashes in the front of her foot. I think she has cut her foot on DH's ring binder (which should not have been on the floor in the first place but that is another argument)
She seemed okay, had a little nap but now she is limping (we have come to my parents). It is a real cartoon limp so I dont know if she is playing up for attention or whether she has actually seriously hurt it - bear in mind she is currently laughing in the tent in the living room with my dad.
Do I take her to the walk in center or not?

Nah. What would they do? Dress it and stuff? They won't do anything you can't do yourself at home. Clean her foot in water and dress it only if it's rubbing on anything. Best thing is let her go barefoot to let the fresh air in, it heals quicker. It'll be sore, but I take it there wasn't much blood so no stitches required, no bones broken, no muscles torn. It's not a doctory thing.

Not unless it looks like it needs stitching/gluing.

Phew - I still haven't got over their glares from when she fell off the bed and NSH direct told us we must take her to the hospital, and they kept glaring at us.
She is currently in the playroom at my parents, having a whale of a time. She is barefoot, and I shall keep her barefoot tomrrow as well.
Thank you!

FWIW, I had to take DS2 twice in 4 weeks with head injuries. They never sent social services round

You can buy that second skin stuff that seals cuts without making the skin go all wrinkly.

I agree that a doctor/nurse would prob only put antispetic cream and a plaster on it, so unless it goes a bit manky, just treat it yourself.

Also, add some Seri Strips to your first aid kit. They're fab!

ELF1981 · 14/10/2007 15:33

I will get some of those steri-strips when in town tomorrow, thanks

Our HV was very arsy when we had to take DD to casulty when she fell off the bed - they did a whole report on us, and said they wouldn't come to do a home visit as they "thought" it was just an accident. thanks for the vote of confidence HV's!

dd fell off a table onto a tiled floor (nearly namechanged but thought I'd brave it!). I feel slightly sick even now, have a sort of bottled scream in my throat when i think of it 6 years later.
Anyway, went to a&e and had no "reports" or anything. Went back to docs in the evening cos she was sick and I kind of thought they should have been more concerned. But here I am offloading.
Agree with others, her foot will be fine if you tend it yourself.

If it makes you feel any better, I've had times when I've had to take one of my children to A & E at least once a week for about 8 weeks on the trot for various accidents. I will say in my defence that I have 4 sons...

LIZS · 14/10/2007 16:39

last time in A and E with dd they asked on Reception if we had a social worker, wasn't sure how I was supposed to take that

Hallgerda · 14/10/2007 21:09

LIZS, I wouldn't take the social worker question too much to heart - I think it's just a standard NHS paperwork thing. I was asked at every antenatal booking-in appointment, and it couldn't possibly have been a judgement on my parenting skills the first time round!
