having been stung twice with people nicking my card details even though I am paranoidly careful, I am going to have to do some xmas shopping that does not involve leaving the house.

So which is safest?

I always prefer to use the phone for security reasons. They can confirm your order/availability too.

It depends on the company doesnt it? I have ordered online from several places no problems. You could also sign up for Nochex - some online places accept that as a form of payment. I have a paypal account but am wary of using it after reading problems with it and excessive charges (read the community discussions on ebay).

Have done phone/mail order too with no problems.

Firstly, if you pay by credit card you are protected by the card issuer. Secondly, if buying online look out for a padlock at the bottom of the page, this indicates that the site is secure. I personally have had no security issues buying stuff online and I have bought loads.

i have bought loads online too....and i am sure that the problems i have had are not as a result odf buying online.....

Technically it's safer online because there's an encrypted payment system (look out for the padlock on your browser). Phone conversations can be more easily overheard...

Popsycal it's not just you that has bad luck... I've had it too - 3000 on surf wear in USA from a bloke in Pakistan (!?) and also BT mobile phone topups in UK. I really don't think that you can avoid it npowadays as apparently they can buy software that randomly generates visa numbers anyway. I just make sure that bank will cover all fraud and make sure that I don't have massive credit limits on the cards.

popsycal · 20/10/2004 12:52

poppyseed - that is exactly what i have done......
