If you don't like it, don't watch/read it.
If you think you can do it better, you're welcome to try.

I have a thing about this, in particular about the sensationalisation of bbc news (I don't care about ITN - they moved other the line between proper news and tabloid newspaper a long time ago). They say things like "the kalshnikov is the weapon of choice..." (eh? did they not just buy what they could get?), they report any press release by a major website as if it were gospel and they use slang. not that I'm terribly bothered about the slang, but it does seem wrong on the BBC.

channel 4 news is pretty good, though. and I suspect panorama was always suspect - it's just that we notice more now we are older and cleverer.

moondog · 09/10/2007 20:16

Nope

Newspapers are basically places where products or advertised or views of random bloggers are cribbed.

Even The Telegraph had an article (a whole fucking article!!) about Victoria Beckham walking out of the Ritz when di 'n Dodi jury visited.

FFS, what hope is there?

SenoraPostrophe · 09/10/2007 20:16

also the broadsheets may have more lifestyle rubbish in them than they used to, but they do have some good stuff usually.

moondog · 09/10/2007 20:16

And can I just say yet AGAIN that my decision to stop watching tv about three years ago is one of my best ones?

so, moondog, you haven't seen robin hood then? or dr who? or heroes? my name is earl? telly has actually been great lately. It's just the news that's shit.

moondog · 09/10/2007 20:19

Dr Who????

I would rather rub raw chillies into my labia.

and I can vouch, that's really sore.

moondog · 09/10/2007 20:25

And my arse.

JackieNo · 09/10/2007 20:25

I wonder (not making excuses for it) whether it's partly to do with the internet - I know that I tend to go there for immediate news, so all the papers are left with is the stuff that isn't going to get superseded by other events so quickly, ie the opinion-type stuff.

SenoraPostrophe · 09/10/2007 20:25

it's ace. pure sci fi with none of the pretensions of other current sci fi series.

moondog · 09/10/2007 20:26

Good point.
V good point.

I was going to start a thread asking if anyone had noticed how bad Channel 4 had become recently.
Apart from the obvious labouring of Big Brother year after year, they seem to be doing far less in the way of interesting documentary and far more formulaic 'entertainment'.

They are all the same every week.

Bringing up baby could have been a great opportunity to research methods into child care and give valuable information - instead it's a mockery which they are trying to pass off as a 'unique experiment'

I definitely agree about Panorama. It's like 'Tonight with Trevor McDonald' now.

SenoraPostrophe · 09/10/2007 20:28

I don't think it's the internet, but (in the case of telly), it's a combination of satelite/cable/freeview and the government's bizarre determination to rate the bbc by its ratings rather than its output.

But, still thinking about the newspapers, there are so many different ways to get news these days, that it must be difficult when working on a paper to work out what to report - something that you have to write so (relatively) far in advance (ie, the night before), when there's rolling news, internet, etc to compete with. (I'm really not making excuses for sloppy journalism, honest - it winds me up too).
