The people who lived here before painted all of the wood work in dd2's room really dark grey.

Can i use emulsion to paint over it before i gloss it ??Or does it have to be proper undercoat ??

Just asking cos i have loads of emulsion

emulsion is water based and gloss/undercoat is oil based (i think) you need to rub down woodwork and then undercoat and then gloss

DelGirl · 17/10/2004 17:27

If you can be bothered you could probably do 2 coats of white emuslsion and then the gloss. That should cover it

DelGirl · 17/10/2004 17:28

oops, like Jampot says, rub down 1st to get a 'key' for the emulsion

nutcracker · 17/10/2004 17:28

Oh so would it be easier then to buy proper undercoat ????
Bearing in mind i want it done as quick as poss.

or nutty - just rub down the existing woodwork and buy some one coat gloss and you may have to go over it twice

nutcracker · 17/10/2004 17:29

Oh should of said that the grey that is on is emulsion.

oh gawd . well a quick sand then, then a coat of emulsion and then the top coat. what colour is it going to be?

fairydust · 17/10/2004 18:23

when we moved in to this house the woodwork was black in the hall we used dulux one coat gloss in white and it covered it perfectly in one coat

noddy5 · 17/10/2004 19:12

yes I usually do that

Dh used to be a painter and decorator.
he says quick rub down with sandpaper then proper undercoat, (not emulsion) , then gloss.
