Baby moved to big carseat, crying when put in

Hi, as the topic title states, I've just moved my 7 month old into his big carseat (he's 22.5 lbs and way too big for baby carseat).

We have a Britax Evolva suitable from 22lbss - 11 years.

Anyways, he hates it. Wether it's the change in position, height or wether he's just darn uncomfy, he hates it. Cries and struggles when i put him in and take him out.

Not sure what to do ! maybe the sitting upright hurts his back ? but he sits for hours on his own without a wobble !

I had thought that maybe the neck support is too low on his shoulders.

Anyway - wondered if anyone else had experienced similar probs and if anyone has any advice ?

TIA !

My DD cried all the time in her car seat, until I got a little attachement from Blooming Marvellous with a soft steering wheel, mobile phone, horn etc. Now she loves it. Could just be that he's bored...?

puffylovett · 05/10/2007 12:17

maybe. he used to peer over the side of his carseat at the dog, who sits next to him on the back seat. maybe he can't see her and it upsets him !

will try the attachment, thanks

Yeah, also, at 7 months, they like a lot more stimulus than when they were tiny babies, and they don't fall asleep so easily in the car seat. Probably he's just a bright boy who likes things to look at/do! Hope it gets better, a crying baby in the car can be really stressful!

I would get his seat checked at Halfords. 7 months is very young to be going forward facing and he may just be uncomfortable.

Georgeous · 05/10/2007 13:35

My DD was forward facing at 7 months because she was very uncomfortable in the rear facing seat. Her legs were too long.

NAB3 · 05/10/2007 13:40

Leg length doesn't matter. You will be told in a decent car seat shop that it is better for a child to break their legs than their necks.

Georgeous · 05/10/2007 13:51

Yes, but as long as your child is over 20lbs then they are safe facing forwards, so they won't break their necks

NAB3 · 05/10/2007 13:54

Okay. Your call.

Georgeous · 05/10/2007 13:57

I do agree with NAB3 though, in that probably best to get it checked anyway, in case he is uncomfortable. If they say he's fine then go for the toys/distraction thing, they worked for us

i was thinking of checking mothercare. didn't think of halfords !! thanks nab.

my instinct is hes uncomfy but i can't afford another carseat at the mo. so i either need 2 squish him in his olds one or hope that he gets used to new. he's been better yest & has no prob fallingasleep !

I would just like to point out that at his age he should still be rearward facing as in the event of an accident his neck muscles will not be sufficiently developed to prevent extreme whiplash injuries even though he is over 20lbs. Can he honestly sit - complertely unaided- for 1/2 an hour? 1st stage infant seats can normally be used until 29lbs weight.

covenhope · 07/10/2007 11:02

This is interesting as our almost 7 month old DD screams when we put her into her rear facing seat and DH wants to move her into a forward facing one. She seems really uncomfortable and I noticed yesterday the top of her head was above the seat, as well as her feet squashed up against the back seat of the car.

She isn't yet 9kg (not far off) so we haven't moved her yet and the seat says it's suitable for up to 13kg or 1 year. No way will she fit until then.

puffylovett · 07/10/2007 13:12

phoenix, he sits unaided for up to an hour actually ! and he does that throughout the day, interspersed with his door bouncer. so he supports his head all day. my baby car seat is only up to 22 lbs, which seems the norm, and he's way too heavy for that now.

i have the same issue coven, head sticking over the top, shoulders crammed in and feet cramped up in the baby seat. it's why we've moved.

I am aware of the dangers and have only reluctantly moved him, with the plan of trying it out and if we must, getting a rear facing 22 lb to 4 yr one - but TBH we can't afford it at the mo, so am really hoping he can stay in this one. He's been fine the last couple of days, even when tired. suspect that it was a new experience and as he's more exposed, perhaps he didn't feel as safe ?

I would trust your instincts puffylovett. I looked into a rear facing seat up to 4yrs as well, but they didn't fit in our old car, seat belts too short. I think if your son can sit unaided for that long then he is probably fine in his seat. All the safety guidance says is "over 20lbs" and that is purely because the forward facing seats rely on the baby's weight to keep the seat stable, at least that is what we were told in Halfords.

NAB3 · 08/10/2007 12:54

You can't afford not to have the safest seat for your child. Take both seats and child to Halfords and get it checked.
