Hi Winterdolly (love the name!)

I grew up in Dublin but live just outside it now in Meath. If you have any questions or I can sort anything out for you, let me know.

winterdolly · 14/10/2004 13:14

Just trying to figure out where the nice or even semi nice but affordable areas of the city are? Would we be better to live outside the city? What is the cost of living like compared to uk cities?

Are you looking at property prices. I am in Dublin so any advice I can give just ask. Do you know where your DH's job will be based.

nerdgirl · 14/10/2004 16:00

Property prices in Dublin are completely crazy winterdolly None of the areas you mentioned are 'nice'. Where is your husband going to be based?

winterdolly · 14/10/2004 17:08

not sure yet where he will based, he does travel about an hour to get to work at the moment so I guess he would feel ok about doing the same there depending on transport links etc. What are the areas like that I mentioned? Are the schools not good or are they big estates? If these areas are not good what about out of town? Where should I look? Can you recommend some areas in the city or in the surrounding area that I can check out? Sorry for all the Qs. Really appreciate this help.

Should I look at flats instead of houses?

What kind of price range are you talking winterdolly?

MissHoolie · 14/10/2004 18:26

WInterdolly I must agree to differ with nerdgirl. The places you mention are primarily working class areas. They all are nice areas to live in but as with all communities there are some parts of them that would be "rough" but isn't that the same with everywhere, even Meath.

Living along the dart line or the luas line is expensive to live in (thats our suburban train link and tram link). Apartments are very small. Might be an idea to rent somewhere for a while to get a feel of where you would like to live.

winterdolly · 14/10/2004 22:51

probably around 250000/260000 euros mark. Not expecting to live in a posh area as we don't live in one now, would just not want to live on a very rough estate and as ds is school age would like a fairly decent school nearby. We would certainly rent for a good while to get a feel for the place. We do live in a flat atm with shared garden and entry but it would be nice to have our own garden and front door.

It is hard to determine how good schools are here. Thre are no league tables as such published so if its on a resulsts basis you would base your choice on that could prove difficult. There are many good community schools in these areas. Alot of schools are religious based, what I mean is they are run by religious orders although more and more are being handed over to as secular schools. YOu mentioned Clonsilla. I have a friend who lives there so will find out a little bit more for you. It might be an idea to post this on an Irish parenting board like rollercoaster.ie.
