have the choice here of tescos, sainsburies or ocado. seems like i may have to do my shoopping online as atm dh is at the hospital and dont know if he'll be out tonight or if he has to stay in?

seems like a weird thing to worry about but has been a few years since done online shopping. last time tescos subsituted 1 large tin of baby milk for 2 smaller tins, would;ve been cheaper to wlak down the chemist.

Sainsburys are improving - they'll give you a voucher if they sub something more expensive and pay you a tenner if they're later than their one hour delivery slot (but not if they're early... grr)

Most people seem to really like Ocado though (we haven't got one nearby sob)

I hate Tesco delivery with a fiery passion.

agree, tesco is the cheapest. ours is quite good too, good substitutions etc, but teh best by far is ocado i think. costs more though

misdee · 13/10/2004 20:45

so if i need to reur anything i'm not happy with do i haver to go into store? cos i will be without a car if dh stays in, and sainsburies is the nearest actual shop to me.

sweetkitty · 13/10/2004 20:46

I use Sainsburys because I work for them and get 15% off and free delivery Tues-Thurs.

Branster · 13/10/2004 20:52

misdee i don't know exactly about these returns but if you spot something during the actually delivery that you are not happy with, the driver would normally take it back and you'd get a refund.

i once ordered 2 big packs of nappies, when i took them upstairs after finishing unpacking i noticed one of them was the wrong size. i phoned up the cutomer service they gave me a refund and asked me to give the wrong item back to the driver when i have another delivery in the future (you can probably keep it i don't thik they'd notice but i gave mine back). on another occasion the driver himself noticed one of the 6pints bottle of milk i had delivered was wet and made a note to give me a refund (which they did) and he let me keep the bottle. i was very surprised as to my own observations the bottle was absolutely fine and was still sealed and told him so but he wasn't happy with the standard and was convinced the bottle has leaked. all these with tesco.
i think it's a bit of give and take, it'll never be 100% perfect because it's not your doing, but i think you'll be reasonably satisfied with any of them.

My Sainsbury's delivery last tues arrived at 10.45 pm, 3 and a half hours late and in the back of a taxi. The driver had been doing deliveries for them all night on the meter because they had driver problems. He was very nice but not exactly the kind of refrigerated delivery I had in mind! Also they haven't replied to my e-mail complaint and dh has thrown the £10 voucher away (as if I would bother using them again anyway). grr.

Ocado 10/10

Tesco 8/10

Sainsburys 2/10

Haven't used any others so can't comment.

pupuce · 14/10/2004 12:01

Well my clients use all 3, I say Ocado is the best and most expensive... Tesco often delivers food which is too close to sell by date. I thbink it's down to the person making your purchases and not "caring" about that !
Sainsbury's is between the two.

Marina · 14/10/2004 12:14

Ocado is the best, but also the most expensive. However, most of the fresh stuff is delivered with maximum life on it, so you don't end up chucking much away.

oiseau · 14/10/2004 12:19

ocado ocado ocado

last order i did I ordered 5 big packs of huggies - they only delivered 4 packs and therefore didn't change me for any of them so I got £25 of nappies free! They may be more expensive but the service they operate saves you money in the long run.

Tesco's terrible for delivering the wrong stuff and then very unhelpful about rectifying their mistakes.

logic · 14/10/2004 12:30

I use tesco's but lately their delivery times have been rubbish. They charge for a certain slot and then turn up an hour+ late with no warning, and no refund of delivery charge. You do get a sullen, mumbled apology from the driver though so that's ok.

prufrock · 14/10/2004 12:41

Also had v. bad experiences with Tesco delivering loads of stuff with sell by date of delivery day. Waitrose OTOH (I have to use them rather than Ocado here) will give you stuff free if it's less than 2 days to go and they don't have any longer. Money you save in service definately makes up for extra cost, and I don't think they are more expensive on branded goods, jsut on own brand and fresh - but quality is far better.
They also have a v. useful thing on teh waitrose deliver site (not sure about Ocado) where you can just see all the things they have on special offer. I often then base my weeks menu plan around the cheap stuff.

annh · 14/10/2004 12:47

Have only used Tescos and had mixed experiences. Delivery times have been good (except once just before Christmas)and never too many substitutions. However, I agree with whoever said that some of the stuff is close to expiry date (e.g. I have had packs of bagels delivered at 7 p.m. at night which went out of date the following day) and they are hopeless IMO at delivering the right size of meat joint. I have ordered roast beef several times and each time, despite specifying the size range and putting an extra note to ask for nothing larger, the beef which has arrived is enough to feed a small army! So I have given up on that and buy it locally.

Main problem with Tescos at the mo is that if I go online on say a Wed evening the first delivery slots are Sat a.m. whereas I always used to be able to get one the following day. I called their customer services centre and they told me they have just had a big advertising drive and so they assume the service is getting a lot more popular but as I pointed out there is no point in advertising something you can't deliver and they are very quickly going to lose their new customers if they don't get some more delivery drivers.

misdee · 14/10/2004 12:54

well have just use ocado. seems very simple to use. will deliver tomorrow so will tell you what i think then. also got a £5 off vouxhers for the next time i use them. very handy.

Waited for Sainsburys to deliver last Friday pm - finally turned up Sunday am. For some bizarre reason they decided I needed 36 extra rolls of kichen paper on top of the four I had ordered. (Won't be buying any more of that for a while then - didn't have to pay though.)

Sainsbury delivery is free Tues - Thurs. You can also reject items that are very close to the expiry date - they put them in a separate bag and the driver is supposed to point them out to you.

zubb · 14/10/2004 13:19

always been OK with tescos - always ask for no substitutions, stuff always well within use by date, refunds straight away if they forget something, great delivery men who talk to ds1 as he asks them lots of 'why?' questions
never used any others though so can't compare.

mrsjingles · 14/10/2004 13:30

I find tescos excellent, they've never been late, if I'm not happy with a product I email customer services and they always redund, no quibbles, and very friendly drivers. I guess it depends on your local store, and how efficient they are, mine are great.

sandyballs · 14/10/2004 13:43

I use Ocado occasionally but have found Tesco cheaper and usually pretty good - have had the odd thing close to sell-by date. Tesco used to do very strange substitutions, i.e. no green loo roll so a tin of beans instead!!

strawberry · 14/10/2004 14:13

Definitely ocado. Yes more expensive but free delivery. Always on time, always a full order with no substitutions - maybe I've been lucky so far.
Also the produce comes from a warehouse not off the supermarket shelves so is always very fresh.
