Before, all easy, log into internet banking via codes - can be done anywhere.

NOW - a little calculator thing that you have to put your card into.

I have to try and remember which one is which (mine and DH's, assuming they send him one at some point). It is too big and bulky to carry about with me so I can only log in at home.

I know it isn't a huge issue, but my HSBC one is this little tiny thing you can put on a keyring - soooo much more sense!

Eh? I'm not with you - but I am with Barclays! I logged on this morning at home same as always.

WhereDoIGo · 27/09/2007 12:58

I got one too! I thought they had sent me a calculator

WinnieThePooh · 27/09/2007 13:00

I am with Barclays and not got anything like that.

MaureenMLove · 27/09/2007 13:03

What am I missing then? Whats the deal?

WhereDoIGo · 27/09/2007 13:04

Its like a calculator that you slot your card into the top. It then generates an 8 digit number which you have to enter. It called PInsentry or something

MaureenMLove · 27/09/2007 13:06

So you put the 8 digit number into the PIN machine? And I guess the 8 digit number is different everytime, to make someone looking over your shoulder pointless, right?

WhereDoIGo · 27/09/2007 13:07

Exactly! Its a good security measure but when your out if you don't take it, you cannot access your bank account. Although anyone can use the machine so me and DH can share.

Tinker · 27/09/2007 13:08

Oh, I started a thread last week about this - haven't looked online since I got it in case I do something wrong now.

WhereDoIGo · 27/09/2007 13:08

No sorry that didn't make sense. The machine generates an 8 digit number that you then enter on barclays website to access your account. But this number will change everytime you do it

MaureenMLove · 27/09/2007 13:11

Oh OK. So its only if you want to use online banking, not in shops for paying by PIN. (Sorry for all the questions, I will of course have all the answers myself in due course no doubt!)

WhereDoIGo · 27/09/2007 13:19

Yes its simply to make online banking safer etc.. God i hope they don't change it in shops i already struggle now

Flamesparrow · 27/09/2007 13:23

Oooooh - so it's a one per family set up?

That'll make life easier - had visions of me colouring one in pink.

The guy down the road had ours - it had been badly addressed (the first number of the house was hidden) He turned up on the doorstep and asked to see ID before giving me my OPENED post

I can understand the whole not wanting to give it to the wrong person, but when you've already opened someone's post, it seemed a tad heavy handed.

The machine itself can't do anyhting as you have to put YOUR card in it. at your neighbour, i would have asked if he knew it was illegal to open post if it was not his!!

nutcracker · 27/09/2007 13:26

I am with barclays and haven't had one of these either.

robinpud · 27/09/2007 13:32

I'm with Barclays too, but am in Australia so wonder if they will send me mine here.. hope they wait until we get back but doubt they are that bright having mucked up all other aspects of the simple job of changing address.

Flamesparrow · 27/09/2007 13:34

Oh, so I DO have to have a his n hers one?

With my neighbour - I remember when we were living in a shared flat early pregnancy with DD. I was off work with hyperemesis and the doorbell went - I stumbled downstairs, signed for this parcel, and then went upstairs, opened it and sat there looking completely baffled at a lapful of computer bits. Then I remembered that I had signed for it for flatmate

I can still remember the really weird hazy feeling now!
