Sleeping babies outside in buggies

A serious query
PLEASE don't lets get into a debate.....

What are your views on leaving babies outside in this weather (10 degrees but dry and sunny) outside in their buggy, sleeping for over an hour with your front door closed though you can see buggy from your living room window?

I know it was common place when I was a baby (and I am fine....).

THe reason I ask is my neighbour is a child minder and the child she looks after is the son of one of my best friends. Baby is 6 months old, wearing a hat and coat and has cosy toes on. Been there over an hour. Front door closed.

What do you think? Am I being over protective?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE lets keep this nice

I also think it's fine. . .good, even (another proponent of fresh air, here). . ..only thing is your friend might not think so, and that's what's important. Maybe the moral dilemma that leads from this is "should you tell her?" I think yes, probably. . . only because some mothers go frantic about their kids being exposed to a chill, and your friend might be one of them. And because she's one of your best friends, so it makes sense you'd look out for her.

codswallop · 13/10/2004 12:45

thought it maight be,

Skate · 13/10/2004 12:47

Frightens me just from the security aspect.

If my child fell asleep in the buggy I'd walk about a bit more till they'd slept long enough/had enough air or bring the buggy in.

NO WAY would I leave a baby outside while I went in. Am I neurotic? Yes.

Angeliz · 13/10/2004 12:52

The safety aspect bothered me too.
I think an hour is too long in this weather!

SpringChicken · 13/10/2004 12:55

Apart from anything else it would be too bloody dangerous where i live - someone would steal your baby

popsycal · 13/10/2004 13:00

Thanks folks for your input

mind made up now!

no wall, gate and garden/drive is straight onto a road - busy-ish even though a cul de sac - lots of cars coming and going

LOL 006! Dont know what the concequences would be but would DEFINATELY prove a point!

hana · 13/10/2004 13:15

I used to do this with dd and her friend in a double buggy - but I would sit outside with them until they woke up usually with a magazine and cup of tea. The double buggy didn't fit through the front door. I never left them out there on their own however.

popsycal · 13/10/2004 13:16

yeah - it is a two fold thing isnt it

  1. the weather
  2. the lack of supervision

I know that my friends think childminder is wonderful and she does have a great manner with the kids

She also lets the 4 year olds play out in the cul de sac alone...and she isnt always outside with them. I would be livid about that

I never did this, with mine or friends', and our front garden has a fence and a lockable gate. We have a tiny vestibule and would squeeze a sleeping baby in there - not sure how happy they felt about waking up apparently in the fridge (quite cold and plain white walls!) but at least we could hear the moment they made a noise.

Defo mention it to your friend, popsy. I would want to know in her place.

JanH · 13/10/2004 13:23

oh dear, why are you on the sick? Is it a pg thing or something else?

throckenholt · 13/10/2004 13:24

um - I would be happier if they were in the garden.

Fresh air is good - but they would need to be checked regularly and within earshot and visible.

popsycal · 13/10/2004 13:24

ridiculous bp and protein in urine

Davros · 13/10/2004 13:26

If you're sleeping, even well wrapped up you get a lot colder than when walking about. My question would be, would the childminder be bothered if the mother knew? If the answer is yes then she shouldn't do it. Also don't think its OK from security pov and lack of supervision.

JoolsToo · 13/10/2004 13:28

No, no, no! - round the back maybe with a gated entrance - but probably not in this weather.

JanH · 13/10/2004 13:30

How many weeks are you? Are you resting a lot? (MN seems like a good place to rest! Or should you be lying down? [wagging finger emoticon])
