I think it's fine to change your name to post something personal that you wouldn't want your DH/DP to see or that you wouldn't want to admit to should you meet someone here in real life. But other than that, the other name changers recently have seemed to me to be detracting from the main purpose of the site which is to offer each other support and advice and a laugh. Sure, we can disagree, but personally I'd rather do so, politely, using my usual name. That's braver IMO. In fact, it's all IMO

WWW - agree totally. There are some things that, were I to post them, are just too personal for me to use my normal nickname. Especially as it's not that different from my real one.

In fact, considering that some time soon I'll hopefully have an article published about Mumsnet, I've been thinking of changing my nickname anyway as it will be easy for people to read the article, come on here, find my posts asking for help with the article and then find out all sorts of other things about me. Is there anything wrong with this?

Willow2 - Not at all. I changed my name shortly after starting on this site, as it was too close to my real name, and I didn't want people to recognise who I was, especially as I had posted things that were quite personal.

My dh knows my new name, and a friend who I have recommended to this site will be able to work out who I am from things that I have said to her and also posted, so I think that a new alter ego may be on the horizon. If I do, it will not be for any horrible reasons, just to make sure that people who know me do not find out all my personal things! My dh says that we shouldn't post personal things, but I am of the opinion that, if no-one knows who you are, then no harm can come of it, and indeed, a lot of good can!
