No idea about putting a loft in but we use our shed as a playhouse and we just cleaned it up and painted it, put curtains in the windows and a table and chairs etc. The kids loved it.

I made a very bog standard shed into a proper boys den by painting it camaflauge colours. All the kids who come to our house are instantly drawn to it.

I honestly think that this, together with a few chairs or beanbags, Dr. Who or Barbie posters, is all you need to do.

Yes!! Do not let a man anywhere near it!!
My husband and his friend volunteered to build a 'playhouse' for my kids, like you I wanted something simple so they thought they would use our old shed, then they decided to buy some more wood as it wasn't quite big enough, the adaptions went on and on and on.
I now have a 16ft by 12ft fully double glazed(better door on it than my house!!)'man hut' which the children don't use, but my husband and his mate do. Oh I forgot to say it now also has sky t.v.in it too!!

I'VE DONE THIS

I will root out pictures

Hmm I can only find the one picture

I did this on a SMALLER scale - we bought a normaly play-house and I built the mezzanine because my children are like the Borrowers i.e. very small and those normal playhouses were too big for them.

This is it mid-way through. I basically built a frame which supported the upper floor and made a ladder to go up to it.

To finish it (not in pic) I built a safety rail around the edge using some old clothes rail left over from a wardrobe I had made a few months beforehand. Then I painted the inside of the shed (including the floor) cream, using exterior wood paint. This really lightened it up.

Made a few shelves and put the toy oven etc. in

Lovely jubbly

Hmm I just used normal softwood/pine planks, about 15mm I suppose, the sort you'd make shelves out of. But my children are light. I fixed the central pole in using small l-shaped brackets and then also added a supporting bracket from the central pole which goes to the wall. I built a supporting ledge using thick bits of wood all around the three sides that the platform is supported on. It is pretty sturdy.

Take a pen and paper along and make a note of how the large ones are constructed. It only took me a few hours, it was quite easy.
