Boring as hell - but at least it isn't contentious (laundry question)

I've had a bit of a laundry backlog for one reason or another, hello...hello.. are you still with me? Sorry, I know its boring..

Anyway, a couple of items of clothing have grown fungus spores (probably were a bit damp or food splotched when they went in the laundry basket), and I can't seem to shift it. I've tried washing at 95 degrees. Is there anything that can be done or do I need to consign these clothes to the dustbin (and improve my slobbish ways in future)

Urhhh HMC. Can't help you there, I'm afraid.

bonniej · 12/10/2004 13:06

I bought an anti mould spray once that I used to get rid of mould in the bathroom in my new house. DS had left a damp swimming towel in a bag for ages that had gone a bit mouldy. Sprayed it and it got rid of it. I can't remember what it was called or where I got it from tho so not much help really

hewlettsdaughter · 12/10/2004 13:07

Hmm, don't know what to suggest HMC - but feel safer posting here than some of the other threads!

MrsDoolittle · 12/10/2004 13:09

Yeah HD!! But I've found you

welshmum · 12/10/2004 13:10

I don't have any suggestions as am rubbish at washing but just wanted to support your laundry thread

JanH · 12/10/2004 13:10

do you mean mildew, hmc? It's pretty much impossible to shift completely - bleach kills it but beats up the fabric too. Hanging out to dry in nice hot sun helps but unless you are somewhere a long way south of the UK that'll be a long wait!

Mould and mildew remover comes in a spray bottle like bathroom cleaner but it's basically chlorine bleach and very strong (and I've never found that it removes mildew completely, I'm amazed about bonnie's towel!)

unicorn · 12/10/2004 13:12

be careful everyone... be very very careful.. you think it may NOT be contentious...but I bet someone out there will find a way of making it a 'hot' topic!!!

can't really help hmc.. if I suggest throwing the fungus clothes will that land me in trouble?

JanH · 12/10/2004 13:13

How about taking a trip to Oz and washing them there? Is that a contentious suggestion?

handlemecarefully · 12/10/2004 13:13

Thanks - I'll look out for some mould and mildew remover. If it kills off the fabric in the process I guess so be it, I've nothing to loose...

Hewlettsdaughter - you made me giggle!

OP posts:
MrsDoolittle · 12/10/2004 13:14

Yes because it's quite expensive trying to get to Oz!

handlemecarefully · 12/10/2004 13:15

JanH,

You're trip to Oz suggestion is irresponsible and immoral. I would have to fly there leading to massive environmental pollution all for the sake of saving a couple of tops. Hang your head in shame woman for proposing such a thing

OP posts:
bonniej · 12/10/2004 13:16

Are you trying to say I'm lying about my towel, JanH? Only joking, it did work and I remember being really pleased at the time as I'd washed it and washed it and couldn't get the mildew off. I do remember the spray was only cheap as well, think it came from the pound shop tbh

MrsDoolittle · 12/10/2004 13:19

I'd chuck it tbh, HMC. Problem is, if you like the clothes. Replacing them might be cheaper than flying to Oz to clean them though!

JanH · 12/10/2004 13:19

No it wouldn't.

JanH · 12/10/2004 13:20

(trying to be contentious. not v good at it. should i pursue bonnie's towel?)

MrsDoolittle · 12/10/2004 13:26

Well that depends of course. I wanted to throw out a pair of knickers I had bought for £1 a pair for when dd was born (you know, lochia and all that stuff). Dh was horrified "What about the poor chinese person that made them only gor you to throw them out!"
He's still not going to fancy me in them!!

carla · 12/10/2004 13:30

Well, I have just tried Fairy Power Spray on dd's T shirt and I will let you know what happens! It's not something I want to chuck out 'cos she painted it herself

Caligula · 12/10/2004 13:43

You're obviously a terrible housewife and mother with terribly low standards and I'm surprised you have the gall to come on Mumsnet and ask domestic goddesses like me such vulgar questions.

There, that should hot things up!

(This is a joke by the way - just in case!)

MrsDoolittle · 12/10/2004 13:45

Yes Grubby Mummy!!!

TurnAgainCat · 12/10/2004 15:17

Taking courage from you, hmc, I now dare to ask whether anyone has a washer/dryer and how to increase efficiency. Mine is over 5 yrs old and the dryer takes longer and longer to dry the clothes. I end up splitting each load into 3 lots of drying and it is on all day long. Now the weather has gone cold they won't dry on the drying rack at all and just go smelly so I have to use the dryer. Any clever answers?

Chuffed · 12/10/2004 15:51

yes it's that funny time where all the stuff you can't put in the dryer doesn't dry as it isn't cold enough for the heater but too cold for things to dry.
Try putting the drying rack in the bathroom (not when it is all steamy). Our bathroom must have some magic ventilation or something as things dry quicker in there than anywhere else.

I won't state the obvious like emptying any fluff in the catcher etc etc.

carla · 12/10/2004 15:55

Fairy Power Spray was useless

I'm watching this thread closely as the way I'm going with the laundry I'll be having to do the same thing.

SofiaAmes · 12/10/2004 22:26

TurnAGainCat, I would guess that if you can't fix your dryer you would save money by getting a new one, since you are paying for loads of electricity by having your dryer running all day.
Have you checked the vent coming out the back of the dryer. Make sure it's not filled with lint or kinked. Also check the outside of the dryer vent (where it comes out of the wall of your house) and make sure that it's not all bunged up with lint or the animal flap is stuck shut.
