You can hem later
Do not sew liner and curtain fabric together on the bottom edge. You can, but on heavier fabric it gathers and looks messy.

I machine sew hems and handsew close to the corners/mitre (lovely word).

I don't use weights but I know some use 2p coins in corners etc. Not advisable on light fabrics as I suppose you will see them.

Have a look at some ready made curtains and copy! That's what I used to do.

I made all my curtains, Austrian blinds (very 80's) and roman blinds when dds were little and I had time.

Click here for a good website and also about mitring a hem

I hem before hanging, I know you can leave it and tack them, but when I have done that in the past I remember after about 6 months that I have to still do it.

As I say if you don't hem the two tegether at the bottom, they have a better chance of dropping at their own rate. Some materials shrink and then drop depending on the temperature through the season!

Leave a good hem incase they shrink in the wash too!

Enjoy...its fun and very rewarding.

I now get a nice lady to do mine she is very good.

i borrowed a book from teh library which was v. comforting. a nice touch is to make the curtain bit wrap round the lining bit so the curtain looks more finished.

have you moved already?

WotsZePoint · 24/09/2007 11:18

God I can't remember about that bit. I don't think so.

I machin hem the bottom lining as much as possible and then hand sew into corner! If that makes sense.

The proper curtain (material facing the room) I do machine after I have made the tube. Pin, tack, sew, because it has to be neat!

The lining should be about 3cm - 5cm shorter, so you can't see it.

Good luck, take your time and remember your iron is now your best friend before you sew anything!
