Just kicked it over by accident. They like it and won't be pleased. Huge splotch all over the only light coloured bit.. It's 100% cotton and the washing label says P in a circle. Any miracle cures, anyone?

just re-read it - the children won't be pleased!!

ok.....here goes......from a carpet cleaning website.....

Blot with a white paper towel to remove as much of the stain as possible then neutralize with the white vinegar solution (1/3 cup WHITE vinegar to 2/3 cup of water). Saturate spot with white vinegar solution, using a spray bottle and blot to remove excess moisture.

Apply a small quantity of detergent solution to the spot. (To make the detergent solution mix 1/4 teaspoon of a hand dish washing detergent which does not contain lanolin or bleach with 1 quart of water; examples of safe detergents are Dawn® and Joy®.) Use a blotting motion to work the detergent into the affected area. If spot is being removed continue applying detergent and blotting with a white paper towel until spot is removed.

Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle, blot to remove excess moisture.

Spray lightly with water, do not blot this time; apply pad of paper towels and brick and allow to dry.

If there is still some stain on the carpet and blotting is not removing it, then moisten the tufts in the stained area with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Let stand for on (1) hour. Blot and repeat until carpet is stain free. Light will cause peroxide to change back to water so no rinsing is necessary. Apply pad of paper towels and weight down with brick.

HTH

It;s my sons' rug, jampot- it's got a kind of twister design with big colourful dots on a cream background. They are rather fond of it and so am I- never thought there'd be coffee near it as it's in their room but today have failed on that one... I knew I shouldn't have started tidying up...Where can I get chem dry extinguisher- is there a brand you'd recommend?

Good idea louee but not possible!

no advice at all scummymummy but you made me guffaw with your thread title, so thanks for that!

Titania · 12/10/2004 10:45

I think the wording sounds american, but the concept is the same!!! let me know how you get on........I always keep white vinegar in as its great for a lot of stain removals. Good luck!!

ScummyMummy · 12/10/2004 10:52

Damn- I knew I was going to regret my pretentions to being a foodie- no white vinegar in the house and am reluctant to try balsamic, rasperry or sarcens malt... Do you think a dry cleaners might be able to help or shall I run out for white vinegar? Wish I was as organised as you, Titania!

JanH · 12/10/2004 10:54

I would flood it with tepid water and then blot dry with a clean pale towel, over and over again (put towel down and walk on it)

Good luck, scummy!

ScummyMummy · 12/10/2004 10:55

Or... is it absolutely definite that things would be even worse if I put it in the washing machine?

OP posts:
Titania · 12/10/2004 10:55

depends how quick you want it done!!! dry cleaners may take a day or two? I am not organised either!! I have used it on coffee stains before (but not on a rug) and it worked.

Titania · 12/10/2004 10:56

what sort of rug is it?

ScummyMummy · 12/10/2004 10:56

Thanks janh. . I've started to do that and will get back to it now!

OP posts:
ScummyMummy · 12/10/2004 10:58

It's 100% cotton, about 3ft by 4ft, not bobbly. Er... that's about as good asmy rug describing gets!

I have got fresh coffee spills out of carpets that way - while still wet and not soaked through and dried.

Good luck, Carruthers. If we don't hear from you again we'll inform your next of kin.

ScummyMummy · 12/10/2004 13:23

SOB! Have ruined it... coffee gone but red circle has bled indelibly into the cream surround...

Onto plan B. I'm going to dye it purple in the bath.

OP posts:
Tortington · 12/10/2004 13:27

ScummyMummy · 12/10/2004 13:31

ScummyMummy · 12/10/2004 14:41

Don't be sad, janh. Early indications are that deep violet dylon is giving it a whole new lease of life.
