My dd has just started crawling and I need to buy stair gates tomorrow.

At the top of the stairs there is a wall on one side and a bannister rail on the other.

At the bottom of the stairs there are bannister rails on both sides, no walls.

Any advice would be welcome, thanks!

Not too much info but we have bog standard Mothercare wooden ones which are very good
ooh and get a travel gate too - ours has been invaluable for blocking off the kitchen in the evening or for keeping him behind whilst someone is at the door etc. Plus you can obviously take it away if you stay anywhere else. We took ours on hol recently and used it at the top of the balcony stairs outside whre we were staying

Lindam are a good make

I had a white one (!) from Mcare as it has a double lock on it and ds was really smart, so knew how to open the handle (hence getting a lockable one)

here it is

if you click to enlarge the pic, then look at the detailed handle one - it is the little button that you press to lock the handle, to stop it opening when shut

it was great

depends how wide, i have a lindam white one on the bedroom as this is normal size, but had to get a lindam wooden one for kitchen + £40 worth of extension kits to fit.

dd hasnt worked out how to open either yet.

however the wooden one is brill as has adults flummoxed for hours/days trying to open it! (most of them just climb over in the end!)

Can I just say, DH got one of these and I hate it. I can't open it one-handed while holding dd, it makes a loud rattling noise when opened which disturbs her if sleeping and it gapes at the bottom so the dog can get under it (and presumably a determined baby could too).

WaynettaVonSlob · 22/09/2007 15:11

LizaRose - you don't have to do the button thing while opening the gate - you can do the button thing furst, then open the gate, so it is possible to do it one-handed.
Also, there shouldn't be a gap at the bottom full stop, so maybe that's just the way it's been put up?
I have one of these and love it, and love the fact that a)it 'disappears' when open (our stairs are white) and b) there's no stupid bar to climb over.

Thanks for all the comments.

I think I'd prefer a pressure gate so I wouldn't have to drill/screw into the wall.

I've just seen a Bambino World gate on eBay that appears to be pressure mounted but it also appears 'no trip'. Has anyone seen these and do they know how it's possible to be pressure mounted and no trip?

hey!! ask your local SURE START as in our area they give them out for free!!

Lovecat · 23/09/2007 21:13

Whereabouts are you, Natasha?

I'm getting rid of our two stairgates as dd is now safe on stairs - was going to freecycle them, but if you're in the East London/Essex area I'd be happy to pass them onto you.

They're this one and I haven't had a problem with them.

Natasha0307 · 25/09/2007 22:08

Lovecat - thank you so much for your kind offer and sorry it's taken me ages to get back to you - my dd has come down with her first cold (which I now have) and hence I didn't log on yesterday.

We live in Hampshire so would be tricky to collect but I really appreciate your offer.

Cheers!
