There's one quite close to me tomorrow and I don't quite know what to expect... will there be slaughtering of small or medium sized animals? Will there be a load of checked shirt and green wax jacket hooray henrys? Or will it be a nice day out in the country with good old, salt of the earth country folk?

Obviously, if it rains we're staying in coz I'm not that bothered

any comments gratefully received.

xx

are you going to broughton? It's very much the latter rather than the former. No slaughtering as far as I can remember. Probably some gun dog trials and maybe a bit of clay pigeon shooting

fryalot · 21/09/2007 20:36

no, not broughton. Tis the Wolds Country and Game Fair

May have a wander over with the kids if the only thing shot at is made of clay

i went to one at knebworth, lots of waxed jackets and guns. but lots of craft things, goats and (the thing that enticed me to go) a rabbit show.

fryalot · 21/09/2007 20:46

but no killing, right?

good.

I went last year & it was fab.I took my vegetarian friend & she loved it too,she didn't even mind her children petting the foxhounds.

They don't normally kill things, you're more likely to see a bird of prey demo, parade of hounds, gun dog displays ect.

southeatsastras · 21/09/2007 20:53

no no slaughtering of small or medium sized animals

maybe some plucking if you're lucky

fryalot · 21/09/2007 21:01

ooh, pheasant plucking?

Didn't go.

Got to the gate, then discovered that they were charging £7 each (including the children) and I decided that £28 was SO much better in my purse than in their pocket, so we turned round and came home again.

Had to take the kids to the park to stop them complaining though

(and the Police officers who were leaving at the same time I was said that it was crap anyway and it was a good job I wasn't going in )

I worked briefly at the bar of one of these once (in Shropshire) and i was Disgusted at the
stuff going on. For a start i think if pigeon / pheasant / rabbit etc. tasted that good we would be buying them in Tescos or McDonalds - i mean they're just an excuse to kill small furries / featheries etc. - no one really wants to eat them.

I am not a veggie but no one wants to really right?

Also............there was a trap exhibition there too - over the years traps so to speak......................i left after 10 mins. It made me feel really ill.

Sick fucks!!!!

fryalot · 22/09/2007 22:01

ugh! Glad I didn't go.

The road outside my house is full of shit and every single vehicle to come out was a flash 4 x 4 with a hooray henry inside

(sorry to any normal people that I may have missed)

If even the police are saying "save your money, it's crap" then I think I made the right decision in the end

and when I say shit, I think I actually mean shit, not just a bit of dirt

I know this.................but it's pretty tasteless really or would be loads more popular - which is my point.

Unless you leave it to hang for a few weeks of course.

fryalot · 22/09/2007 22:08

LL - I decided last night that I would definitely go, but I wasn't prepared to spend the money.

Things like that are supposed to be free to people who live within a certain radius and I do, so I shouldn't technically have had to pay at all, and to pay £7 each for a 3 year old and a 2 year old.... call me a tight fisted bugger but I wasn't prepared to do that.

Was curious about what goes on though (had a look out of bedroom window but due to a strategically placed tree I couldn't see a sodding thing!)

But then you might have better taste than me because you eat squirrel or three week hung deer!

Yum!

Do you really think so?

JossStick · 22/09/2007 22:14

The Trap exhibition was revolting to me though!

Not so bad if you eat it and enjoy it i guess but alot of people wander out and shoot / trap animals with no intention of doing so.

I think some people have this country gentlemen rubbish going on and it doesn't really mean anything other than shooting a few small furries they don't intend to eat or will eat and go mmmmmmmmmmmmm even though it's horrid.

Hope this makes sense!

I'm off to a game fair soon.Last year children got in free-hope it hasn't changed.

We eat loads of game during the season-I was shocked when my MIL said she'd never tasted pheasant in her life!

There are two shoots local to us & the birds are always distributed around at the end of the day.If its shot-its eaten.I have a freezer full of pheasant casserole by the end of the season,as does most of the village.
