I know i have asked this before but i can't find it.

You know those driving courses where you pay a stupid amount of money to learn to drive within about a week, any one done one ???

nope, but am thinking about it. still not got back to driving lessons since the crash.

nutcracker · 11/10/2004 17:46

Well i have never had any lessons at all and can't afford to have one never mind an intensive course but i think it would help me soooooo much with my low confidence e.t.c that it would be worth it.

Plus i am very impatient and once i start i'll want to be able to drive every where at once.

nutty - it took me 5 yrs and 4 tests to pass mine! and no, it didn't help my confidence, more like crushed it as I was not used to failure. - have got used to it over the years though

iota - you aren't supposed to say that

well the good news is that once I'd managed to pass the damn thing, I got a job as a sales rep and drove 25,000 miles a year. So it paid off in the end
But seriously, I couldn't have hacked a week's course - one hour lessons were draining enough. Have you ever had any lessons?

nutcracker · 11/10/2004 18:03

No none ever. I got behind the wheel once with dd1 laughing hysterically and dd2 screaming her head off, i stalled the car straight away and got back in the passenger seat

well it might be an idea to try a lesson or 2 before booking a week's course. I really did find lessons stressful and can't imagine spending a whole week learning to drive in one go.

The intensive courses are ok, but almost every driving instructor worth their salt will advise against them. Purely because they are a) very stressful b) very expensive and c) it takes time for everything to 'click', the intensive courses don't give you the chance. They just chuck you in at the deep end.

However, if you are intent on going for it, then I would agree with iota who said that it makes sense to have a couple of one hour sessions first, just to find your feet.

Hmm suppose i could give the money to someone i trust to keep for ma for driving lessons only and then have as many or as few in a week as i like , how does that sound ??

You can buy lessons in bulk from your instructor. You'll prob get a discount too. You'll get a refund for any lessons you don't take, say if you don't get on with yiur instructor etc etc.

The biggies (the AA & BSM) and most of the smaller independent driving schools offer discounts for block bookings.

I did an intensive course and it was the biggest mistake ever. I mad such a hash of the test, I asked to go back to the test centre and was told there was no point in doing the highway code bit. The instructor I passed with advised doing a couple of 2 hour lessons a week. He used to come and get me from work, spend 1.5hrs doing theory and the learning bit and then half and hour driving home. I got far more from that then the intensive course.
It took me 6 attempts to pass my test. For five of those I should have just stayed at home.
