Gift ideas for man in his eighties please!

What do you get them?
Have run out of ideas for DH's grandad. He and Grandma are both in their eighties, very churchy, kind of stuck in the 50s, don't seem to like ornamental stuff, not really fit enough to do much gardening, can't see or hear fantastically. Have previously got him Jeeves & Worcester tapes but no idea if he's played them. TBH I think they're only really interested in churchy stuff but I wouldn't presume to shop in that direction, too specialised and personal.
Any ideas much appereciated, thanks.

Um, we have recently bought DH's grandad a posh pen, nice scarf, Harrods tea caddy, picture books of "old" (insert name of your local town here) - mostly photos so not too bad in terms of eyesight.

Or surely he'd have room for yet another beautifully framed photo of your kids ?

Have a look here I got my aged FIL some 'nifty' long handled nail scissors from here...he was really pleased with them!

My dad (who's in his late 70s) absolutely loved the really bright lamp I got for him (very cheaply) from Ikea - it's one of those halogen bulb ones. Think it's called espresso or something. His eyesight is not great and so it's ace for reading

sazzybee-that reminds me dh's Gran was really pleased with a touch lamp we got her for her bedside table.She thinks it's magic or something lol.

oh and we always get her a tin of m&s biscuits

My beloved Pa is in his eighties. (Given that you're speaking of your dh's grandfather, I am feeling a bit ancient myself now. However)

I give Pa gadgets - easy-jar opening devices, eg, but carefully chosen to look state-of-the-art & not too "senior" - and, particularly, lively contemporary books (ie that he might not have spotted himself) with no rude bits in. The Boris Akunin books went down OK, though I haven't heard in detail what he thought; and Carl Hiaasen was a hit. There was also an anthology of bits of left-field travel-writing, I think.

We also do taking to concerts, or other sorts of outings.

The "photo-journal of the last year" idea I do for my mum. Pa would think that was nice, but would prefer time with real people.

I got my uncle (80) a nice wall lamp, it had a sort of cosy glow. Basically, It was a leather hide stretched over a crocodile shape frame work, painted with flowers in red and green. And with a small attachment for you to construct your own bulb onto it.

The gift was so absurd, he was really touched. Previously I had been buying him weapon replicas.

I am not really a sort of John Lewis/Harrods type of tie and golfball person....

Oh god, and this is exactly the kind of signature post where somebody will come and say, Oh Tiramisu, I ^know" you/your uncle!

That is also a good idea, that is what I give my dad (or cognac).

LOL at whiskey, if only! They are teetotal and strictly churchy - MIL was banned from reading Twinkle comic as a girl due to there being a wizard character in it!
I just know if we bought them a gadget it would sit unopened forever, like the smellies we bought them which I found one day snooping (for gift ideas, I swear!) in their bathroom cupboard .

Oooh just thought. In keeping with my tie idea, how about a tie pin? You could get it engraved with a special message too.

What about a mini hamper of his favourite goodies? - a nice marmalade, some chutney, honey, expensive biscuits, a small bottle of brandy or whatever he drinks. Maybe a small photo of the kids in there too and a voucher for the cinema or something. Someone I know did this for elderly rellies at christmas and it went down very well.
