What do with your children on YOUR birthday?

Or is it best to always plan nothing?

I don't usually make any plans, but foolishly let myself and DH get excited my last birthday. We tried to plan a fun day out for all of us -- then the children refused to go along with it... Take a sulky 7yo anywhere is just awful, ime. Best I could do was a much reduced outing with just one child.

When might they start to think of it as my special day, instead of just about their own whims at the moment?

it's my bday tomorrow but ds will be at school - the three of us went out to dinner yesterday which was v nice - ds is is always good about other people's birthdays, so can't really say when your children might change...do they make you cards etc ?

We have a rule in our house. If it's your birthday everyone else has to be your slave for the day. Applies to adults and children and both mine go along with it (nearly 10 and neary 4)

Other than that we just do lie in/slavery/doing what you want to do if it's your birthday/special tea and cake/dinner out although we have also done big hotel birthdays adults only too.

We all go out for a meal together if its the weekend. If a week day when dh is at work, I go with my twin and the kids and then my parents come over in eve for cake etc.
My twin comes if its a weekend too with her df.

It was my birthday yesterday, dp's today. I can't recommend this year's experience:

  1. Go out for slap up meal and too much drink with dp in the evening
  2. Spend the night from 1am-7am mopping up child vomit
  3. Spend dp's birthday haggling over who feels worse and therefore deserves another spell in bed!!!

Seriously though I usually like to book something we can all enjoy. This year it was supposed to be a circus trip, then an afternoon tea party for our friends and kiddie friends. That was the plan until the vomiting child intervened!

DH usually cooks me whatever I want to eat for dinner. He is a very good cook, so its usually fab. My next birthday is 40, so I'm having a party for friends and then an afternoon tea for family the following day.

I don't really celebrate my birthday and this week I have to go to a parents evening on the sam eday as my birthday. Since the kids got a bit older they want to celebrate it so I said we would get a big cake from the bakers and treat ourselves after the parents meeting at school. I might go for coffee in the morning with a couple of other mums just for a change! Dh is sending me off shopping by myself to treat myself as he hasn't got time.

We're often on holiday on my birthday (August) so the deal is I get to choose our activities that day, then we go out for a meal in the evening.

If we're at home, we occasionally go out for a meal (all of us), otherwise we do the usual birthday cake etc - sometimes the children make the cake.
