Painting a wooden bedroom floor...........anyone done it, any tips?

am thinking of taking up carpet in my bedroom and painting the floorboards white. Had a quote for having the floor sanded and varnished by professional but very expensive. A friend suggested painting instead and I saw a picture recently of a lovely white painted bedroom floor. What will I need? Obviously it will need sanding, and undercoat, then top coat over the white paint?? Anyone have any tips for me.

Thanks

yup

use oil based paint. either gloss or eggshell for a less shiny finish.

my dad used some stuff from Watco on a bathroom floor ... expensive but industrial strength and utterly reliable (wont crack, fade, yellow is waterproof, un scratcheable etc)

whats on it now? may not need sanding, unless its really rough. so long as its clean an free of dust and oils, paint will stick - esp to an unercoat.

i love pale painte wood floors. good choice!

think about an 'off' white... a hint of some other colour perhaps? warmer colours (reds, oranges, yellows) woul keep it from starkness in the long grey winter... (i like starkness sometimes tho, so just a tip to consider)

Thanks. Not sure of state of floor because haven't had a look underneath yet. Hopefully it won't need sanding as you say, I really don't fancy doing that, but will if I have to.

I've painted a wooden floor. Used International floor paints. Don't do what I did, however, which was to mix 2 shades and realise halfway through that you needed more but didn't know how much of each colour. I think a very pale grey looks good

May I but in and ask how do you clean your painted floors? I have been wondering whether we moping is a good idea?

NappiesGalore · 15/09/2007 10:22

a amp, not wet mop, should be fine. if its gloss, its well sealed.

you could try weathersheld paint (like what they use on outside wookwork) thats dead easy to clean

NappiesGalore · 15/09/2007 10:22

a damp, not amp.

i think there was a thread a bit back - couple of months- when a lady said f and b floor paints were Fab but you have to sand the floor

i am planning on doing 6 beds and sfter recent experiences with wax etc have confirmed my wishes to paint them

will sand first though

Whatever you do, you have to use a primer before painting. We hired somebody to do the bathroom floor and obviously we were the first clients that presented him with "virgin" floorboards. Anyways, he went straight on them with the floor paint and the wood absorbed the solvent part of the paint but the oily one (as the pigment) stayed up and wouldn't dry, they just became very sticky and the pigment was easily transfered out of the bathroom. One week of no change (and not being able to use the bathroom freely) and I gave up and put the old carpets back (which now have been replaced by vinyl floor.

Do you HAVE to sand first? We did ours in a previous house and they looked ok, obviously not immaculate but then they were covered with furniture and a rug. Only visible round the edges and biggest problem was the mess we made of the varnish.

Sand them down and use a decent primer. We've recently moved into a flat with painted floorboards everywhere except the kitchen and the bathroom. There were carpets in before and the people who did the floors obviously just ripped up the carpets and slapped a couple of coats of paint straight on. The paint smelled for more than a month and even now (almost six months sincer it was done) moving a chair or dropping a toy can sometimes chip bits of paint off. They do look nice though (although I would have preferred properly sanded and vartnished to painted floorboards, tbh).
