Clever people who know about cars, any thoughts on why my car won't let me fill it up wiith diesel?

It does use diesel, BTW.

I went to fill it up last week and the whole process was mind-numbingly slow and the supply kept cutting out. I managed to get half a tank's worth and gave up. I assumed it was a problem at the petrol station.

I went back today (with a scarily empty tank), but a different petrol station, and the problem is worse. I managed to get £5 worth of diesel into it, before it cut out altogether (and it took a good 10 mins to do that).

A very helpful lady at the petrol station tested the supply and it was fine. I tried another pump, just to be sure, and nothing.

What is going on? Is this yet another horrendously expensive problem?

Very anoying. Dh is away for the weekend with his car, so I'm stuck at home with next to no petrol.

(Audi A6, if that makes a difference).

csws - it is the same person who is/was pg and had the m/c and yes she does live very close to you. It was at 11 weeks, apparently. Not a secret btw (she was telling people), but it has obviously hit her very hard. Her 2nd one in a year I believe.

Oh dear. I didn't know it wasn't the first time. Might explain why I haven't seen much of her over the summer.

Yes - try different angles and depth of insertion.

With the petrol nozzle too.

We are going to have a family outing to the petrol station tomorrow for a 'how to fill a car with diesel' masterclass. I can hardly wait ....

Dh is in no doubt that it is all due to my incompetant technique and believes I am making a fuss about nothing. I do hope he has the same problem too.

My old Micra used to do this (petrol not diesel) - seemed worse at supermarket pumps for some reason? You have to stand with the nossle at a stupid angle and not quite all the way in and pump veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery sloooooooooooooooooowly. Drives me nuts so I swapped it with dh and I now drive the Almera

kidsrus · 15/09/2007 21:52

i used to find that i needed to use the pump slower as the petrol splashed back and activated the cut off sensor.
so just pull the lever half way and that should work

kindersurprise · 15/09/2007 21:53

lol, bet your DH puts the nozzle in and the diesel flows unhindered into the tank. And you are left standing there saying, "but that is exactly what I did yesterday..."

Happened to me once, was bitching about the car because the windscreen wash wasn't working. The mechanic said, "you just have to press this button" the bloody thing worked. I was so embarrassed. That was the last time it worked though!

MuffinMclay · 16/09/2007 19:12

Well, we had our excitig trip to the petrol station. As predicted, dh stuck the nozzle in and the fuel flowed fast and furiously, just as it should.

I stood at the side and observed his technique (yes I did feel ridiculous, but here was no one around). He only put the nozzle in half way and tilted it up rather than down, so I guess that was the problem.

I can't understand why I've managed to do it properly 100s of times before and now can't, but there we go. It allowed dh to raise his eyebrows a lot and be unbearably smug for what felt like an eternity.

Thanks for all the top tips anyway.

Typical!

Hope he didn't pat you on the head and say, "never mind, darling, it is quite complicated after all"

Isababel · 16/09/2007 19:16

I think I'm heading for the same, I have been filling the tank for ages but just last week it has started doing the same as yours! (and it is a diesel too!)

kidsrus · 16/09/2007 22:54

you wait my car used to chug and cut out when i drove but always behaved when d/h drove!
i promise the choke wasn't pulled out with my handbag hanging from it lol

Isababel · 17/09/2007 09:02

Does your car has a choke???

kidsrus · 17/09/2007 23:18

no its just something i heard a few yyears ago about a lady using the choke to hold her handbag. i believe she took her car back to the garage on numerous occasions and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. lol
