OP posts:
enid · 04/10/2004 12:45

skiving

nutcracker · 04/10/2004 12:45

Erm depends

if they are alone then probably skiving, if they are with an adult then probably ill

Most kids round here are definatly skiving if they are off on a school day.

enid · 04/10/2004 12:45

my childminders daughter is NEVER at school, always off with some ailment or the other. Mind you, she eats chicken burgers for breakfast so its hardly surprising

AuntyQuated · 04/10/2004 12:46

none around here unless they have a pass signed by school. local council come down heavily and it seems to work. i took dd to the docs at 9a.m last week we had to have a pass and it is only up the road from school

Im always thinking whats the story when I see kids during the day. thing is they never look ill do they. If they are ill surely they shouldnt be being dragged around a supermarket or town. Do loads of people do home ed? I think sometimes its just lazy parents, some small thing happens which gives them an excuse not to take their kids to school. Should throw stones though because next year we are taking our child out of reception to go on holiday. Shame on me.

nutcracker · 04/10/2004 13:28

A girl in Dd's class is regularly missing school lately and I know it is because on the days her mom doesn't work she wants a lie in so doesn't get up to take her in.

She has missed at least 2 days out of every week they have been back so far. Can't believe the school haven't said anything to her.

Hulababy · 04/10/2004 13:44

As I live in the city centre and the skate park is just over the road I see loads of kids out of school. Have to say that my first thought is truancy - and as the news last week stated that truancy has risen recently, I suspect in most cases I am right.

Private school holidays are normally similar time to state schools, but longer. So at this time of year they shouldn't be on holiday.

Home Edders - surely they'd be with an adult and doing something educational/constructive, etc.

Ill - why are they out and about? Again only if with a parent too.

BTW the amount of children who truant with parental o=consent is also growing

Hulababy · 04/10/2004 13:45

AuntyQuated - that sounds like a great idea.

MeanBean · 04/10/2004 13:50

Pepsi, I can't imagine lazy parents not wanting to take their kids to school. Energetic parents might not want to - having kids at home is far more trouble than dumping them at school, surely?!

pepsi · 04/10/2004 13:57

I would agree on that point Mean Bean, but some parents just plonk there kids in front of the telly and do it so often that the kids in fact just get used to it. For me, yes it is a rest when my little boy goes to school.

Hulababy · 04/10/2004 13:58

Rise in teenage truancy from BBC site in September this year.

Unauthorised absence in secondary schools has gone up by 6.54% from last year, government statistics reveal.

However overall truancy has gone down slightly.

muddaofsuburbia · 04/10/2004 13:59

They could be returning to school after a music exam

If hanging around in the park with another school age - skiving!

If with a parent - probably been to dentist or hosp appt or something.

Usually though - the ones I see look like right scallies and are probably skiving.

Tortington · 04/10/2004 15:23

i nearly phoned education authority til my husband told me the local school had broken up early for holidays - rather than the catholic school my kids go to - its a good job i asked first!

if its a regular thing i would definatley phone the edumication authority - cos thats the kinda person i am.

MrsCoddyClooney · 04/10/2004 15:36

I know a lot of paretns use kids as cheap childcare for their younfger siblings

OP posts:
suedonim · 04/10/2004 16:02

I'd think they were from another local school which had different In Service or Local Holiday days to us - it happens all the time.

Re the ill children aspect - don't be too quick to judge. Ds2 was a very severe asthmatic and would often be in hosp then off school for weeks. Recovery was gradual and as part of his recuperation I'd have to build up his strength so that he was capable of enduring an entire day on a big campus. To begin with, he'd negotiate the stairs at home then move on to being strong enough to wander in the garden, then a short trip to the shops, parking as close as possbible to them etc. So things aren't always what they seem.

charliecatthenonsmoker · 04/10/2004 16:07

If my kids are sick at night, 10/11 pm, generally I keep them off the next day Just in Case. Im not up early enough to judge whether they are ok or not in the morning so I just keep them off.
DD1 has been at school for 2 years and its happened maybe 3 times. And if ive needed bread or milk or whatever I drag her out with me with a sense of guilt, but id prefer she had the day off and looked like she was skiving than having the embarresment of her spewing in the classroom and the hassle of me having to go and pick her up halfway through the day.
I cant be the only one?

wizzysmum · 04/10/2004 16:18

Am about to start home edding. Mental note to self - knit swimsuits.
I must say whenever I'm in a large shopping area (Bluewater for eg) I see lots of kids out shopping with parents and remember from my teaching days getting notes from parents - "x was off today as we went out shopping for our holiday next September".
