your valued opinions sought please. Would it seriously put you off buying the house if everything else was reasonable and the kitchen was nice (note not fantastic but everything else was fine)?

I know they say you don't get your money back but am wondering if we could really loose a sale just because of an avocado bathroom suite.

Just had an estate agent round and overall I'd have to say his interest was verging on... OMG what a house. Wondering if I am I just oversensitive.

I'd actually agree with posyhairdresser. It amzes me hwo blinkered people can be when viewing houses. Dh and I are quite good at "mentally stripping houses naked" when viewing them - but judging by the comments of veiwers on House Doctor and similar programmes, that seems to be quite a rare skill.

And by all accounts it is turning in to a buyer's market.

When dh and I sold our flat 5 years ago, it went for £5,000 and £10,000 more respectively (sold for £60k - so those are high perecentages of difference) than identical flats on either side of us that had been sold less than 2 months before. These were Glasgow tenement flats - so all the same confguration: double bedroom, large lounge, dining kitchen, bathroom. One was the flat across the landing, the other one up the next "close" (entrance hallway) - ie through the wall. The only difference that we could detrmine was that ours was well presented -simple decoration, good new kitchen, clean white bathroom, clutter tidied away (or put into the storage unit we'd hired).

we have just bought a house with a hideous blue suite but it never put us off as it's easily fixed.Go with the avocado and paint white with plants and natural wood and it'll be fine Good Luck

We did buy a house with an avocado suite...still there 6 yrs later (for lots of good-ish reasons). So clearly it didn't put us off.

But if I was planning to sell I wd rip it out and put in a cheap white one, as everyone says, it wouldn't cost much. Don't need anything fancy if y're movign out.

I think the market (here anyway) is cooling and you need all the help you can get. Why not get a quote and see if you think it's worth it?

Hulababy · 07/10/2004 14:07

No it wouldn't. Bathrooms (along with kitchen within reason) are one of the rooms I don't mind having to re-do myself and are relatively inexpensive to buy anyway.

Hulababy · 07/10/2004 14:08

Sorry, I mean't - no it wouldn't put me off buying!!!

Why go to the bother and hassle of changing a suite especially when you have small children. I know our bathroom is a turn off but I can't face not having a bathrrom for even a day or two when I have four children and I will not even get the joy of using the new suite. Plus, how naff to put in a cheap suite you would not want yourself if you were staying in the house. I couldn't bear to think the buyers would rip it out again when they moved in. Such a waste! Better to let them choose what they want from the start. There's an idea. Agree with any buyer that you will replace the suite before they move in with something of their choice (within a reasonable price range of course).

We bought our house with this strange almost luminious peach beathroom suite. Its foul, but didn't really put me off. As long as its clean and fresh looking I don't think it matters that much.

smellymelly · 07/10/2004 16:05

I bought this house with an avacado suite, but it was old and tatty as well, and I wouldn't use it till it was changed to a clean (white) one!

Thankfully I had a 2nd bathroom to use. I only changed it to a budget B&Q one which cost £250 and it made all the difference.

TBH I think you will find it much easier to sell the house if you can change the suite to a white one, as there are many people who can't be bothered with the hassle of changing it.

If you can't change it then go with Noddy5's idea. Cleanliness in the bathroom is more important really, and getting bathroom carpets up is a must. Lino or laminate always looks better.

color - whilst I personally would not be put off - the point is that some people would be - therefore you are reducing the number of potential buyers, which ultimately means you'll get less for it. personally I think people are daft to make decisions about a house based on such a thing - but the fact is, some people do. I'm off to brush my teeth in my avocado bathroom...

We saw a house with one, but the rest of the house, though quite tatty and in need of new stair carpet and painting all over, we loved so much that we put an offer on straight away - we thought be would replace it in time. The house was perfect for us,so it didn't matter too much.(sadly we lost house as we didn't have a buyer and I still feel sad about it !)
