I think the mother described the smell as 'meaty' >gag

Heathcliffscathy · 04/10/2004 13:53

anyway, i didn't and wouldn't want to do that...i understand if some of you think it's not for you...but we did it (once i'd read about the placenta being sacred and stuff, i just couldn't let them incinerate it iyswim)...and i'm trying to work out what to do with it, having kept it this long, definitely don't feel i can throw it out now...and don't want to anyway...

I read about a woman who fried up her placenta with some onion. She said her only disappointment was that she thought she'd overcooked it and would be eating the next one raw! >

Heathcliffscathy · 04/10/2004 13:55

god, i should have known this would happen if i posted on this...

We kept it. Carried it home wrapped in plastic and put it in the freezer until I found a tree that I liked to plant over it. We had a little ceremony under the full moon. I didn't particularly like looking at it - reminded me of a liver - but I'm glad we did it. Every time I look at the tree (a lovely ornamental plum) I think "that's ds's special tree".

I read/heard eating the placenta was supposed to prevent pnd, dunno how true this is, was also told it tasted like chicken [gaggin icon]?!?! This all back in in school during health ed.

Heathcliffscathy · 04/10/2004 13:58

yay! that's more like it...that's what we wanted to do...but what if you move???

JoolsToo · 04/10/2004 13:58

stop - stop! my sides are splitting!

JoolsToo · 04/10/2004 14:00

think I'll stick to regular chicken if its ok with you

I really don't see any point in keeping it!

motherinferior · 04/10/2004 14:04

I found mine totally fascinating, I have to say (and that was with a new baby to look at too!).

carla · 04/10/2004 14:04

I wonder how you'd make the gravy?

NomDePlume · 04/10/2004 14:20

OMG ! Found the placenta thing, Lotus Birth Method.

JuniperDewdrop · 04/10/2004 14:40

I didn't keep mine but had a good look at them both as best mate's was incomplete. She didn't know until a week or two later then had to be operated on to remove the bit. She isn't right to this day because of it The fact she had to leave her newborn daughter because no one had double checked is abysmal.

Well done you though Sophable Isn't there a nice forest or place nearby where you can plant it just in case you do move?

meysey · 06/10/2004 22:36

mine's still in the freezer 8 months on - oops

one of my midwives mentioned you can do a placenta print and it looks like a flower.. sounds like a nice idea if it will defrost ok

JoolsToo · 06/10/2004 22:39

nope - mine had to be taken away for 'analysis' but from my notes - it was pretty manky - reason dd was a caesar.

Mirage · 07/10/2004 13:31

I couldn't look at mine-I have had a lifetime of watching animals eat theirs & it makes me feel queasy.

My friend had to remove part of hers at home after it was delivered incomplete at the hospital.Urggghhh!
