Do you always have a roast dinner on a Sunday?

Was thinking of this while cooking dinner today. When I was a child, we had a roast every Sunday, come Hell or high water. Dh's parents still do (even though there are just the two of them at home now).

We don't btw, I made fish pie for dinner today, and very nice it was too.

We used to when I was a child as well, but it is a rare thing in my house, every couple of months maybe. Dh is cooking an indonesian stir fry as I speak. Kids had cheese, ham and cucumber filled wraps for their lunch, followed by a choclate brownie and fruit juice.

No we don't every Sunday. I tend to either spend all morning preparing a roast dinner and pudding or doing the barest minimum to provide a hot meal (today it was shop bought quiche). I do like a roast meal though and would happily eat one every Sunday if someone else prepared it ocassionally!

JanH · 03/10/2004 18:42

We often do but in the evening. And not in the summer much. (DH does it and I eat it very happily, Lonelymum!)

marthamoo · 03/10/2004 18:42

Oh, I'd eat it if someone else made it - but it does take all afternoon to prepare and about 5 minutes to eat, doesn't it?

Lou shuddup about the brownies already !!!

Jan, if I do do a roast, it's always in the evening - not for lunch. Otherwise dh just snores on the settee all afternoon, a la Christmas Day!

Don't underestimate the power of Aunt Bessie . . .

JanH · 03/10/2004 18:46

Aunt Bessie's yorkshires will be joining us this evening, libb.

moo, I was going to say that about the sodding brownies too!

dogwalker · 03/10/2004 18:46

We had a Sunday roast today about 6 o'clock, and it was commented that we always seem to fall into this pattern come autumn. There seems to be something comforting about a roast. Not during the summer though. Usually then we'll have a bbq or a salad.

fisil · 03/10/2004 18:47

never ever cooked a roast in my life. Then again, it's only for the past year that the meat eaters have outnumbered the veggies, and ds hardly eats enough to justify a roast.

I was thinking about this today, though. We bought some homemade jam at church this a.m., which ds was desperate to eat ("my jab, my jab") so he and I made some scones together. Now, that is a real Sunday afternoon tea!

marthamoo · 03/10/2004 18:47

Yorkshire puds are one thing I simply cannot cook. Aunt Bessie rules in the moo household!

Oh for a dh that even knows what the inside of an oven looks like....(pretty disgusting in my oven's case )

I can cook yorkshire puds as well moo

kalex · 03/10/2004 18:51

LOU,

You are evil, I have not had a chance to even write down the ingredients, let alone shop for them and then bake them.

kalex · 03/10/2004 18:52

OK Truly a bad mother I am, must go find a bad mother parenting site

Nah I'll just pretend I spend the day being fab, and igenoring the kids in Mnet

lou33 · 03/10/2004 18:53

I made double this time. I get a bit worried as I don't own scales, so it is all done by feel etc, but they are fanbloodytastic, which i put down entirely to madamewongs instruction.

Lonelymum · 03/10/2004 18:53

I must admit I have no idea how to cook Yorkshire puddings. I once tried to find a recipe for toad in the hole with no success....

popsycal · 03/10/2004 18:56

i can cook yorkshire puds...the best trick is to stick in an extra egg white....

JJ · 03/10/2004 18:58

Just reading the title and replying: my youngest and I are on our own tonight.. playing on computers and will eat hot dogs with ketchup. That's a veg, right?

I do love a Sunday roast, though. It's so easy, but only really good when the weather is chilly.

LipstickMum · 03/10/2004 19:01

Martha, I was thinking exactly this today! When I was a child we, like you, had a roast every Sunday, mainly in the winter and I loved it. There was such a great atmosphere in the house while my parents made the dinner, had a glass of sherry (!!) and my sister and I listened to the charts!
Anyway, as a result of those memories we are having roast chicken tonight I can't wait!

nikkim · 03/10/2004 19:03

we have one probably every other week, some sundays I just don't have time or the energy. They are not cheap either, i would rather have a good roast dinner with top quality meat and trimmings every other week than an average one every week.

AS for Yorkshires Nigella's recipe is fail proof they always rise majestically, althought my sister thinks they are a bit cakey. We love to eat them for supper with golden syrup and cream.

marthamoo · 03/10/2004 19:04

JJ - too right! Ketchup counts as veg, and the smashing orangey bit in a Jaffa cake counts as fruit.

Really fancy a roast now...might do one in the week.

That is so funny..I cooked roast chicken today for me and my boys. The first Sunday lunch as a family of 3. It was lovely but-how the f**k do you carve a chicken?? I ended up grappling with the drumsticks and just yanking at them!! Both boys commented that it looked nothing like a normal chicken. I do need a man around the house for some things it seems.

DelGirl · 03/10/2004 19:56

I do a roast just for me. Not everywweek and certainly not for the last few. Love love love roasts, could eat them everyday. I do';t do a joint or a whole chicken or anything, just a portion of meat, oooh er missus. It's the only meat I get these days
