Moving to Suffolk

Hi everyone

We are planning to move to Suffolk next year and was wondering if you have any tips for us in terms of which are the best areas to live in.

I'm totally new to this as I've never moved out of London. I am doing a lot of research atm to make sure we choose a good area with good schools for our son.

Thank you 😊

Which areas are you looking at? Suffolk is a lovely place to live and has some excellent schools

MiniGuinness · 12/02/2020 04:10

Primary schools are very good, but secondary are not. What are the secondary schools like where you are? I am not sure I would ever swap London for Suffolk.

I absolutely love Suffolk - for holidays. If I was retiring I’d be looking at I’d be moving to Aldeburgh / Orford. If I had a young family I’d be looking to stay closer to London. It does feel very cut off.

Will you need to commute back to London for work? In which case you'll probably want to be near Ipswich gaumont for the train.

I grew up in the area and DM still lived there, just outside Ipswich. We love Suffolk and visit regularly.

Do you have DC as may will also affect where you want to live. I love the Suffolk coast but wouldn't want to live there with DC. There's not enough for them to do especially as teens.

Ipswich isn't great but there are some lovely villages nearby. I really like Bury St Edmund's but that would be a pain if you want to commute to London.

Suffolk is lovely but is quite big so where you go depends on what people can tell you.

Thank you everyone. Was looking at Bury st Edmunds as it's closer to Cambridge.

I won't have to commute to London for work. I will find a job near where I live.

My son is 3 and want to have activities for him.

The schools where I live are good schools but it's getting very expensive and want to afford to buy a lovely little house with a garden for my son

Bury St Edmunds is lovely. Lots of family friendly attractions nearby with Ickworth National Trust just down the road in Horringer village.

Sebert Wood Primary is excellent, look at houses in Moreton Hall area to be in catchment. It's a large housing estate, the older parts offer bigger houses and are probably more desirable than the newer parts as closer to town etc. Avoid estates such as Priors and Howard if you can.

There are some excellent village schools too, I believe Lawshall is one of them.

Cambridge is 47mins on the train and probably an hours drive in rush hour so not too far. For occasional trips to London there is a fast train from Cambridge so could probably be there in two hours door to door.

Good luck with your search 😊

if you don't need to commute to London then BSE. is great. I live just outside Cambridge and sometimes go to events in BSE in the evening - concerts etc. Its a really easy. drive.

I'd rent first. We moved out of London to Hertfordshire. Love the town we ended up in - but wouldn't have bought this house on this road if I'd had a bit more local knowledge.
It also took a couple of years to adjust - and I was desperate to leave London!

There's a small train from a Sudbury which isn't too far from Bury St Edmunds, I believe it may be free to park at the station. That train takes passengers to Marks Tey where the direct London train links from.

We moved from London to the Norfolk / Suffolk border 12 years ago and we absolutely love it. It’s a beautiful and peaceful place to live. Lots of places to visit for families and some gorgeous beaches in the summer. There are lots of good schools - secondary as well as primary, not sure where that earlier comment upthread came from! Like everywhere there are good and bad points. The main thing to consider is that as your children get older and they can’t drive you will be driving them everywhere- trains aren’t reliable and people think nothing of regularly driving 20/30 miles to visit someone or do something as everything is so spread out. It doesn’t bother us at all but just something to keep in mind - it was a bit of a shock when we first moved and were used to walking outside our house and jumping on a bus to go 15 mins to the nearest city shops! It takes 25 miles to drive to our nearest shopping centre.

Thank you very much.
I'm very nervous about the move. My husband was brought up in Norfolk. He's not as apprehensive as I am in regards to the move.
I am sure I'll like it once I get used to Telga area. I moved to this country when I was 21 and always lived in and around London.
I'm sure I'll be fine with the move :-)
Just must make sure we choose a good area to live in. X

Hi,
I’m new to posting on mumsnet but I often search it. We are currently applying to move to a different borough, we can by pass local connection under exceptional circumstances.
We are looking at Suffolk, I found west Suffolk council very helpful and willing to help, I have a meeting booked with them and have sent all the forms they emailed me back and they have called various professionals involved to support our application.
I also contacted east Suffolk council who just told me to fill out the application online so I have done that just a case of sit and wait for that one to process I guess.
Where is best to live in Suffolk east or west?
My children are 15 & 9 both have additional needs, primary with good understanding of sen is essential he has his ehcp but is mainstream with a lot of extra support. My daughter will hopefully soon attend college again with additional support.
I’v been told how lovely bury and surrounding areas are to live, and that some places in the east are lovely too, with a bonus of being nearer the coast. My lad absolutely loves the sea.
I’m not just sure where would be best east or west Suffolk.
Thank you I’m advance for your thoughts.
