3-4 mins i think.

MerlinsBeard · 01/09/2007 11:43

i put mine in cold water and do them for 7 mins FROM COLD

For a large egg at room temperature, bore a hole in the non-pointy end with a pin or needle (this stops it bursting when the air inside expands) Place in a pan and cover with water from the cold tap. Put in on to heat and bring to the boil. Cook for 2 1/2 minuts from when it is boiling vigorously.
You may nee to adjust timing to your own taste and egg size.

totaleclipse · 01/09/2007 11:44

For soft boiled, put into boiling water for 3 minutes.

MerlinsBeard · 01/09/2007 11:44

actually ignore that, DP just reminded me that they are never right when i do them so he does them instead

Wallace · 01/09/2007 11:46

5 mins put in boiling is what i do

foxybrown · 01/09/2007 11:46

for medium sized eggs - put in a pan of cold water, bring to boil, boil for 2 mins. Add a drop of vinegar should the shell crack it'll stop all the white coming out.

MamaG · 01/09/2007 13:47

You were all too flipping late

I did them for 5 mins in boiling water and they were fine

Four minutes. Can't believe there are five minute addicts out there. THe right number for a hard white but a runny yolk is four minutes.

juuule · 01/09/2007 17:19

Depends...size of egg, size of pan, how much water, temperature of water at the start. No wonder I can't soft boil

Wallace · 01/09/2007 17:26

But 4 minutes and you get runny bits of white. bleurgh.

i think you did it right mamag

NannyL · 01/09/2007 17:36

for SOFT boiled i personally do from room temp (not fridge temp) eggs for 3.5 mins in vigerously boiling water.

often we have smaller eggs due to the fact the eggs i boil come from our own chickens in the garden not shops!

Hurlyburly · 01/09/2007 19:45

"But 4 minutes and you get runny bits of white. bleurgh."

No no no. Not if the water is bubbling and boiling when you put the eggs in ...

Wallace · 01/09/2007 19:47

That's odd. Could it be my cold scottish eggs need a bit longer?

multitasker · 01/09/2007 19:49

I was always told that putting them straight into boiling water would crack them? So I do them from cold and give it 3 mins max when water boils.

Hurlyburly · 01/09/2007 19:53

No. It doesn't crack them so long as you lower them in gently with a spoon. Obviously hurling them in might not be the best idea in the world.

NannyL · 02/09/2007 10:32

also if you pierce an egg with an egg piercer (ie a pin in a thing) then the eggs will NOT crack as as the air expands it can release itself and not crack the egg
