if it's one of those big, hairy bread plate sized ones like in oz, i almost vomit, break into a sweat, and really FREAK OUT. really anything bigger than a 5p sends me into a spin. such a girl....

i got trapped in a toilet at work once as one was under the door handle. was throwing toilet rolls at it, and sprayed it with air freshener to get it to move. was not a good day.

i'm not at all bothered by spiders

lailasmum · 30/08/2007 16:23

I live in the UK. The biting spiders we have in our house are ones from the canaries and they were apparently bought over by the victorians on all the plants they used to import. I live in devon though and I don't think it gets cold enough to kill them off. They are breeding around here and spreading north.
There are some native spiders that bite though I have been told the bite is not that bad and they look more like a normal house spider and you would really have to go out of your way to get bitten. Where as the one that bit me seemed to have vindictive streak and tends to run towards any vibration and cause a lot of swelling an pain when they do bite.
I still see them regularly but we just steer clear of them. They don't seem to be in the house any more since we had new windows as they can't seem to get back in in the colder months. But the green house is full of them.

Am absolutely fine with spiders, incl fairly big ones. Now wasps... (although since ds I have been better with them, and have entirely lost my fear of bees)

scream, run like a lunatic. i seem 2 b getting worse with age. try and get dp to move furniture 2 clean coz to scared of spiders being behind

PersonalClown · 30/08/2007 16:31

I hate the bleeders but I'm nice and catch them in a glass and give them flying lessons out of a first storey window!
Didn't used to though. Used to drop the Yellow pages on them from a great height and then jump on it.

orangehead · 30/08/2007 16:32

laila- thanks for freaking me out

orangehead-unless you live in the westcountry then you shouldn't be seeing them anytime soon to try not to freak out too much.

ChippyMinton · 30/08/2007 16:38

Not bothered at all. If stuck in the bath the DC make it a ladder. If it hangs around we give it a name .

grouchyoscar · 30/08/2007 16:43

I'm with you Chippy

I ignore it and leave it be or put a glass over it, slide a sheet of paper underneath and either drop it out of the window or put it in the cellar

Then I reassue DH that it's gone and everything is OK now (He's a girl re spiders)

sweetkitty · 30/08/2007 19:37

Shout look DDs an incy wincey spider lets look at it and count it's legs, pick itup we all have a look then I put it over the fence so it can find it's mummy and daddy.

notnowbernard · 30/08/2007 19:39

In a highly embarassing way, which I am sure will resut in DDs also developing this truly ridiculous phobia

I point it out to ds's and say "Ohhh look, a spider. His name is Fred."

And Ds1 the Pragmatic replies "It's name is not Fred, Mum, spiders do not have names. Never."

MarshaBrady · 30/08/2007 20:29

Terribly, with true spider phobia.
My whole family (english growing up in the wilds of Australia) are absolutely bonkers, (except Dad who saved us all).

Even now all I have to do is stare pointedly at my brother or sister's shoulder and they'll jump, scream and run out of the room. lol

They are big hairy, bad, bastardos out there though.

I really need to sort it out to try and not pass on to ds who is two.

yaddayah · 30/08/2007 20:34

I like spiders
I hate daddy longlegs though .. and will squish them without a second's thought (very bad karma )

Bet I come back as one..

RustyBear · 30/08/2007 20:45

I was just reading this thread when there was a horror-stricken yell from the playroom* I knew at once DD had seen a spider! It was pretty massive to be fair - she just thrust a glass at me & wordlessly pointed.
It got away though, under the sofa. I think she may be going to bed early tonight....

  • Sorry, family room - not allowed to call it playroom any more....
Othersideofthechannel · 30/08/2007 20:47

I think, Ooh DH is going to be really scared of that when he finds it and leave it.
