Tortoises - Anyone got one ? How much looking after do they need ?

My mum has a friend with a new litter of tortoises and she would like to get two for my boys. I think it's a reasonably good idea but just want to see how much looking after they need. Dh is dead against it, but I think he can be persuaded if necessary !

We already have a cat if that is relevant !

We used to have tortises when we were children, we had a dog and cat.

I thought they were banned now.

Ours kept escaping and going into next door garden under the hedge and eating his lettuces in his veg plot.

I remember that we had to take alot of care of their habirnation conditions I remember them being put into boxes with lots of newspaper in the cuboard.

The care of them has probably moved on since then this was nearly 30 years ago.

I know you can get them at our local pet shop but I don't know if they're the usual house ones. They aren't v big, it says on the tank easy to care for.

There was a tortoise thread recently - hang on a sec

JuniperDewdrop · 30/09/2004 15:07

link from our petshop

JuniperDewdrop · 30/09/2004 15:08

I want one too but with the fish and guinea pigs and my longing for a boxer dog I don't think it's feasible

Also our petshop sell hedgehogs that are so cute and when they get to know you their spikes go down for a cuddle.....Awwww I want one of those too

JanH · 30/09/2004 15:09

Oh I can't find it!!! There is a thread which refers to it, from lisalisa (where has she gone?) but not the original. Bugger.

Tortoisecare.co This might help?

marthamoo · 30/09/2004 15:24

Is it just importing them that is illegal?

Am I alone in wondering why anyone would want a tortoise for a pet? They are hardly cuddly and they have horrid little beaks and wrinkly old necks and they pooh on the floor (my friend at Primary School had one).

JanH, your link takes me to the calpol thread. Do I have to give a tortoise Calpol ????

Oh, Kayleigh, sorry, lol!

That was my previous link...tortoise one didn't take, obv - does that ever happen to you? (I do usually check first!)

Try this

Kayleigh · 30/09/2004 15:57

JanH, no that never happens to me

Think I'll tell my mum, thanks but no-thanks. Without dh's support there is no way we will be keeping tortoises. Looks like too much expensive on housing/heating/lighting etc. We don't have the room either so would have to build a shed/run for them. No,no,no.

Maybe I'll get my boys a Cyber pet each

Kayleigh if you decide to get a TAMAGOTCHI they need lots of looking after too.

We got one for DS in July as they were at that point allowed to take them to school but on mute, the day after he got his they were banned so I was left looking after it. I am a childminder of 2 children so I had 2½ children to look after.

They need feeding, cleaning up poos, playing with, giving medicine

DS is very proud that his is still alive and has not died and so we are on 10th Generation.

Just a warning

PS they sleep at night.
