How old were your kids when you first took them to the cinema?

I suspect that DS is still too young, but he is happy to watch a disney dvd at home - usually in two halves and is generally riveted to the screen.

So - how old?

Can't remember when Nemo came out but dd2 is 5 next month ... took her to that and she was fine.

popsycal · 28/09/2004 19:37

I took my two oldest ones when they were 2 - think ds saw The Tigger Movie and dd1 saw Piglet's Big Adventure. We sat right at the front so they could fidget if necessary and we could get out easily for the loo etc. Both sat mainly on my knee, absolutely enthralled.

popsycal · 28/09/2004 19:41

ds is just 2 y 2 months....
too young?

Dd1 was 2 1/4 and it was The Tigger Movie, dd2 almost 3 and it was Piglets Big Movie! They both watched it all and loved it. However, we are lucky enough to have a VERY small cinema that isn't too loud. They are now 4 and 6 and we "did' Shrek 2 at a slightly bigger, louder cinema which was fine. We'll move onto a multiplex one when dd2 gets over being freaked out by very loud/unexpected things!! HTH

P.S. I know quite a few friends who've taken kids to big cinemas only to have had to leave, with screaming child, before the trailers have finished! So pick film and cinema carefully is my advice. As these friends kids have still not gone back to the cinema-2yrs later!

How old is your ds BTW!

Could you take a mum chum with a slightly older child, so he'd feel reassured by their prescence and know what's expected of him?

popsycal · 28/09/2004 19:50

he is very happy with new situations etc and isnt fazed by stuff at all....will wait til nearer christmas and see

still haven't taken dd who is 3. I think she's too young and to sit still for that long is too much for her. Maybe when she's closer to 4/5

Metrobaby · 28/09/2004 20:06

dd was around 3 and we saw Piglets Big Movie. She loved it, and to my amazement sat through the entire movie mesmerised whilst eating popcorn . I took her to see Shrek recently however but that was not as successful a trip - despite the popcorn.

discoinferno · 28/09/2004 20:08

My two were both two and a bit. Shark Tales looks good. Maybe you should wait for that if he likes Nemo.

KateandtheGirls · 28/09/2004 20:10

I took min two to see Shrek 2. It was the youngest's first time and she was 2y 1.5m. I was a bit wary about what I was letting myself in for, but she loved it and sat there the whole time eating her bag of popcorn.

KateandtheGirls · 28/09/2004 20:10

I took my two...

MUMINAMILLION · 28/09/2004 20:11

Mine were in their two's. All loved it except dd3 who was terrified of the darkness and the noise. She is 4 and is still the same though - screws her eyes shut and holds her hands over her ears until she adjusts to it all!

roisin · 28/09/2004 20:14

Mine were both 4 before we took them: they are both sensitive little flowers and most U films were far too scary. In the end ds2 was still scare - horrified by Lilo & Stitch and traumatised by Nemo! Finally found success with Thunderbirds this summer when he was 5.

Our cinema do re-runs of old kids films on Saturday mornings (at cheap rates). This means they can enjoy a film that they've already watched on video, and therefore the whole big screen thing is not too scary.

WideWebWitch · 28/09/2004 20:50

It was Shrek so I think he'd have been about 4.

Miaou · 28/09/2004 21:02

Mine were 4 and 5 the first time they went - partly due to our location (a very long way from a cinema). We took them to see Ice Age. Dd1 (who had been to the theatre previously), walking down the steps to the seats, looked at the screen and said "But mummy, where are all the people going to stand?"

nikkim · 28/09/2004 21:31

dd was about two and a half, we took her to see scooby doo!! THink we have seen a few others since, the first two times we sat on the front row incase she wanted a wander while the film was on but she didn't. WAs a bit worried as she is a handful but she loved it, she especially loves the kids food packs we get, popcorn, fruitshute and a hotdog!

Thomcat · 28/09/2004 21:32

Blimey - she was tiny! I wanted to do SOMETHING with her but didn't know what so took her to the flicks one afternoon, it was well before her 2nd b.day..... can't remember, got the cinema stub in her baby box! It was the little Polar Bear, anyone remember when that came out?

Thomcat · 28/09/2004 21:33

Forgot to add that she loved it,had never watched a full length DVD at that stage either.

The 2nd time I took her it was to see Brother Bear.

color · 29/09/2004 10:53

waited until 8 years old - have always hated the loud volume and worry about their ears!

Lonelymum · 29/09/2004 10:56

Haven't taken mine yet but the 2 oldest boys (when aged 7 and 5) got taken to a film by friends and saw Finding Nemo with their 4 yr old sister.

Kayleigh · 29/09/2004 10:57

First film for ds1 at 3 years was Monsters Inc. First film for ds2 was Shrek2 also at 3 years. Both were fine although ds1 didn't like the dark much - we probably hadn't prepared him. Had told him it'd be loud, but not dark. Ds2 went into the cinema like he'd been going for months. He was so proud to be going out with his big brother.

Must say it was lovely to be able to go out as a family to the cinema instead of me and dh having to toss up for i, with the other one being left behind with ds2. Bloody expensive though !
