I'm getting married in February and dp and I have just chosen our wedding cake. It has red roses on it, we have red roses in all the flowers and I am drressed in red. On the side of the cake is some writing and we have decided to have a bit of Robbie Burns.
So if we go for the original 'O, my luve's like a red, red rose' rather than changing it to 'love's', will people realise or will they just think that we are thick? What would you think??

We are not from north of the border by the way!!

I would change it to 'love' - because it's easier to read....any your not Scottish. I realise it's not being faithful to the original but presumably noone will pick you up on it....

welshmum · 28/09/2004 12:57

'should read and 'you're not Scottish' - who am I to advise on spelling!

Northerner · 28/09/2004 12:58

If it said luve I'd think you were thick, but then I'm uncultured!

libb · 28/09/2004 13:00

I would have Luve - but I do like that particular poem a lot anyway. Sounds really luvely xx

Tissy · 28/09/2004 13:01

you'd get away with "love's" in England- wouldn't try it up here though!

carla · 28/09/2004 13:06

Luve.

TraceyP · 28/09/2004 13:27

I'd stick to the original, and if anyone thinks that you're thick then that's their problem! Have what you want, not what you think anyone else would prefer.

lilibet · 28/09/2004 16:06

Perhaps I should write the poem out in my very bestest writing and put it near the cake - let's see what everyone makes of the seas ganging dry!!

I would stick with the original.

The original is, though 'O mu luve is a red, red rose' (with no mention of like!). I'm fussy about my Burns!

aloha · 28/09/2004 17:20

I wouldn't think you were thick, but I would think you had a dyslexic cake icer! (apologies to any dyslexics)
I would definitely do a double take, and agree that Luve's is hard to read if you are't familiar with Burns in the original. Are you getting married in Scotland? If not, I personally would go for Love. The wedding sounds lovely (!) btw.

Forestfly · 28/09/2004 17:24

My wonderful scottish ex is a huge burns fan and would be livid if he saw the spelling changed, so you can work out what i think now

jasper · 28/09/2004 22:40

YOU CAN'T CHANGE BURNS!
ooh er, you have got me going now.
I would be horrified to see it changed to "Love" just to accommodate people who are not educated in this respect. (as TraceyP says, it's them wot's thick, not you!)
Don't let Mears see this, as a fellow Burns country girl she will get in a right fankle.

A February wedding sounds wonderful.I hope you get one of those lovely clear and crispy days.
Good luck!

Tony Blair is being shown around a hospital. Towards the end of his visit, he is shown into a ward with a number of people with no obvious signs of injury.
He goes to greet the first patient and the chap replies:
"Fair fa' your honest sonsie face
Great chieftain o' the puddin'race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place
Painch, tripe, or thairm
Weel are ye wordy o' a grace
As lang's my arm."

Tony, being somewhat confused grins and moves on to the next patient and greets him. He replies:
"Some hae meat, and canna eat
And some wad eat that want it
But we hae meat and we can eat
And sae the Lord be thankit.

The third starts rattling off as follows:
"Wee sleekit, cow'rin, tim'rous beastie
O, what a panic's in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty
Wi bickering brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an chase thee
Wi murdering pattle!"

Tony turns to the doctor accompanying him and asks what sort of ward this is. A mental ward?
"No," replies the doctor, "It's the serious Burns unit."

Sorry couldn't resist! I would go with the original spelling but then I am Scottish!

It is a little known fact that when Bonnie Prince Charlie died his bones were returned to Glenfinnan, where he raised his standard. At the time a shepherd was building a dry stane dyke and hid Prince Charlie's remains in the stones. This is the background story behind the song Bonnie Charlie's noo a wa'

I'm sorry, slap wrists for hijaking but this really made me laugh!

Promise no more Burns jokes!
