Does anyone have a foolproof recipe for making playdough? I had one which involved flour, oil, salt and ?? You warmed all of it together in a pan which was incredibly difficult to clean afterwards but the stuff was brilliant. Too many house moves and now I've lost it.

there is a website called the pram club that has excellent reipes for playdough Iincluding a microwave one) and many art and craft ideas.

Roisin - cream of tartar! That's the one. Threw out tub from cupboard on Sat and wondered what on earth I had it for (best before 2002!). Going out to buy some more now. Thank you.

here's a slightly different one. Made up 4 batches (different colours) for dd's birthday the other day as 'favours' and wrote up the recipe on some coloured card for the kids. Went down well. (I think!)

2 cups flour
2 cups salt
2 cups water
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons oil
plus food colouring of your choice

low hear stirring constantly. Will thicken after a few minutes. Store in fridge when cooled. Will keep for months!

Does the food colouring not colour the childrens hands????

nikkim · 28/09/2004 10:48

It does if they are helping you mix it but after that no.

Another good use for food colouring is to colour rice and use it instead of sand in either a pit or bowl. Feels very therapeutic as it runs through your fingers, a bit like water. Or colour dry pasta shapes my dd loves sorting them into shape and clours and then making pictures with them. Or if you are brave and you could fill a paddlig pool with cooked pasta and spaghetti and stand back! The last option is especially good for older babies.

Misdee - I think the cream of tartar makes it keep slightly better. But if your kids (like mine) always end up mixing all the colours together into a yucky brown mess, and then refuse to 'wreck their models' and put the stuff back in airtight tubs so it all dries out anyway, then it's probably not worth the hassle!

Black playdough is great fun, and you can add glitter to it as well for a sparkly effect.
