The boss sounds like CJ from Reggie Perrin. Does your friend's DH work in the 1970s, by any chance?

Played a blinder? He has betrayed his insecurity around women, successful women in particular and his wife above all.

And if he doesn't feel like that but was just making a ruthless bid for more money then he's someone whose willing to exploit society's basic fear of women for his own ends.

What would you say about a woman who burst into tears to try to get herself a payrise? Typical manipulative woman? Well this is the male version.

What a twat.

I earn more than dh.

Perhaps I should get him to give this tactic a try

UnquietDad · 22/08/2007 20:51

Sounds to me as if he has pushed the boss's buttons which he knew would get him the rise. Maybe "I'm very talented and worth more" just wouldn't have cut it. Wish it worked for me.

My sister earned over double the salary of her (soon-to-be-ex) husband.

He couldn't deal with the humiliation.

One of his typical comments to my sister:

"It's fucking unfair that you earn more than me... I am far more intelligent than you. And you talk in Estuary English"

Cunt

Interesting. It's very wrong but I can see binkleandflip's argument too. Just... interesting.

In the bigger picture it obviously says terrible things about industry and society but is anybody really surprised about that? They're the same reasons I dare not ask for a 4 day week to see more of my son (because men don't do that) but my wife has (because women do).

To be honest if my DW went into a pay review and said 'I can't earn less than my husband' and got a good rise I'd be delighted with it. But of course, there's a political difference.

I don't know what I'm trying to say really. Other than we've clearly got a way to go in many ways.

binkleandflip · 23/08/2007 13:53

I just think he negotiated well ie he got more money - good on him tbh.

That simple really.

What a bizarre boss/employee conversation. Am speechless. Which does not happen often...

Kevlarhead · 23/08/2007 20:58

Wow.... If I'm stuck in a job with a bunch of arseholes like that, I'll lie about DP's salary, use the same argument and rake it in!
